European Darts Grand Prix 2024 | Day Three Preview and Order of Play
The fourth European Tour silverware of the season is up for grabs at the European Darts Grand Prix on Sunday as the last 16 face off in Sindelfingen.
A £30,000 top prize is on offer at the Glaspalast as 12 seeds and four qualifiers go head-to-head across two sessions.
The afternoon session plays host to the Third Round ties, before the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and final follow in the evening.
Undoubtedly the stand-out tie of the afternoon sees former World Champions Gerwyn Price and Gary Anderson renew their rivalry.
The pair most recently met in the first European Tour event of the season – the Belgian Darts Open – with Price prevailing 6-4 at this stage of the competition with seven 180s and a 104.8 average.
Price is looking to go one better than his runner-up spot in Riesa last weekend and got his campaign off to a sensational start by thrashing Brendan Dolan 6-1 with a 110 average on Saturday.
Anderson incredibly mirrored that display as he registered a 110 average of his own in defeating Christian Perez 6-3, and the Flying Scotsman is eyeing a first Euro Tour title in the space of a decade.
Meanwhile, defending champion Rob Cross looks to remain on course for further glory at the Glaspalast when he takes on former UK Open champion Danny Noppert.
Cross come through a thrilling contest to dump out last week’s International Open champion Martin Schindler in a deciding leg after surviving two match darts and defying a 106 average from the in-form German.
Noppert, twice a Euro Tour finalist, also registered a ton-plus average in coming through a last-leg shootout as he denied Daryl Gurney in a high quality battle.
The opening match of the day sees former World Champion Michael Smith take on former Euro Tour finalist Josh Rock.
Smith, runner-up in Thursday’s Premier League Night 12 in Rotterdam, produced a nerveless 83 checkout in the deciding leg to spoil Raymond van Barneveld’s birthday on Saturday, while Rock was steady in seeing off Jeffrey Sparidaans 6-2 with a brilliant brace of 170 checkouts along the way.
World number one Luke Humphries resumes his quest for a seventh European Tour title with a showdown against Stephen Bunting.
Humphries will out to avenge his 6-4 defeat to ‘The Bullet’ in Riesa last week after squandering a 4-2 lead as Bunting landed a pivotal 146 checkout.
Humphries brought his six-match losing run against Luke Littler to an end on Saturday as he survived a match dart before sealing a dramatic 6-5 win, while Bunting survived five match darts from Ryan Searle in a thrilling 6-5 success from 5-3 behind.
Ritchie Edhouse aims to continue his remarkable run of form when he faces former European Champion Ross Smith.
Edhouse reached his first Euro Tour quarter-final since 2018 last week and is now out to repeat the feat, having seen off James Wade and Dirk van Duijvenbode for the combined loss of just three legs.
Smith, the number 12 seed, was also a quarter-finalist in Riesa and is bidding to reach that stage of a Euro Tour event for the sixth time, having overcome Luke Woodhouse 6-2 in his opener.
Damon Heta aims to pick up from where he left off on Saturday as he comes up against World Championship semi-finalist Scott Williams.
Heta recorded the third highest average in European Tour history (117.48) in a 6-2 rout of Mickey Mansell, which including six 180s and six from seven on the doubles.
The Australian endured a disaster on the doubles against Williams in the World Championship as ‘Shaggy’ prevailed by four sets to one, and he has so far seen off Niko Springer and Krzysztof Ratajski this weekend.
Three-time World Champion Michael van Gerwen steps up his pursuit of a first European Tour title of the season with a tie against former Premier League champion Jonny Clayton.
Van Gerwen, who sits third in the Premier League table despite four nightly titles, got under way with a 6-1 rout of Sweden’s Johan Engström with a 100.7 average on Saturday.
Clayton, meanwhile, punished four missed match darts from Chris Dobey to snatch a deciding-leg victory with four ton-plus finishes to his name.
Top seed Dave Chisnall aims to silence Sindelfingen when he takes on the last German standing in the competition – Gabriel Clemens.
Chizzy has endured a tough start to the season by his standards and averaged just 86 in a 6-3 win over Keane Barry on Saturday, while Clemens has dispatched his fellow countrymen Rene Eidams and Ricardo Pietreczko for the combined loss of just three legs.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Third Round and Quarter-Final ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs, Semi-Finals best of 13 and the final best of 15.
