World Seniors Championship 2024 | Day One Preview and Order of Play
The 2024 World Seniors Championship gets under way on Thursday with an unmissable double session at the Circus Tavern.
The third staging of the over-50s event sees 32 players competing for a £30,000 top prize at the iconic Circus Tavern in Purfleet – the former home of the PDC World Championship.
The tournament, which features an array of former World Champions, major title winners and qualifiers, takes place from February 15-18.
The afternoon session kicks off with a clash between 2015 BDO World Champion Scott Mitchell and in-form qualifier Matt Clark.
Mitchell enjoyed a fine Challenge Tour campaign in 2023, finishing runner-up in three events, securing a spot in a host of Players Championship events towards the back end of the year.
The Dorset darter defeated Peter Manley in an eventful debut at the Circus Tavern 12 months ago before losing out in straight sets to eventual champion Robert Thornton in Round Two.
Clark returns to the Circus Tavern stage for the first time since 2007 after coming through the final qualifying event earlier this month with victory over Kevin Edwards in the final.
The former Challenge Tour event winner has appeared in 14 World Championships across the BDO and PDC codes, notably reaching the Quarter-Finals on his Lakeside debut back in 1996.
Meanwhile, crowd favourite John Henderson marks his World Seniors Championship debut with a tie against ten-time Women’s World Champion Trina Gulliver.
Henderson comes into the event as the pre-tournament favourite to follow in the footsteps of his Scottish compatriot Robert Thornton, and the former World Cup of Darts winner will be hoping to hit the ground running.
The Highlander was agonisingly denied a return to the PDC ProTour last year after claiming two Challenge Tour titles, and has already picked up a World Seniors Tour title in 2024.
Gulliver is bidding to pull off a major upset and secure her first win at the Circus Tavern, having lost out to Thornton and Dennis Harbour in 2022 and 2023.
Multiple major finalist Terry Jenkins begins his campaign with a showdown against three-time BDO World Championship quarter-finalist Paul Hogan.
Former PDC world number four Jenkins reached the semi-finals of the inaugural World Seniors Championship two years ago before losing out to Mark Dudbridge in last year’s Second Round.
Hogan has made a solid start to the season, winning a World Seniors Tour event and defeating Matt Clark in the final of Qualifier Three to reach the Circus Tavern for the first time.
The 60-year-old enjoyed a memorable 8-6 victory over 16-time World Champion Phil Taylor in the Quarter-Finals of the World Seniors Matchplay last September.
An all-Canadian clash sees 2022 World Seniors Master David Cameron come up against debutant qualifier Jim Long.
Cameron’s finest hour came at Lakeside two years ago when he defeated Kevin Painter, Robert Thornton, Colin Monk, Richie Howson and Phil Taylor to become the inaugural winner of the World Seniors Masters.
Cameron has made two appearances in the PDC World Championship, most recently going down 3-1 to Jamie Hughes in the First Round at Ally Pally in December.
Long’s sole appearance at Ally Pally came in 2018/19 when he defeated Mickey Mansell before losing out to Benito van de Pas.
The 55-year-old, who defeated Michael Smith in last year’s US Masters, progressed through Qualifier Two to seal his spot in this event, whitewashing Mark McGeeney 6-0 in the final.
The evening session sees three-time BDO World Champion Glen Durrant and former PDC world finalist Mark Dudbridge go head-to-head for the second successive year.
Dudbridge stormed to a straight sets victory last time out, going on to reach the quarter-finals – where he was denied by Kevin Painter.
The 2004 World Matchplay runner-up claimed his first World Seniors Tour title in 2023 and also landed a sensational nine-darter in a Target Open Series Event in November, becoming the first player to achieve the feat since the inception of the World Seniors Tour.
Durrant, the 2020 Premier League champion, will be out to avenge last year’s defeat and register a first televised win since the PDC World Championship behind closed doors in 2020.
Former WDF World Champion Neil Duff opens up with a tie against TV debutant Richard Eirig-Rowlands.
Duff’s Lakeside title defence was ended by Chris Landman in an agonising seventh set decider in the quarter-finals in December, and he also reached the quarter-finals of last year’s World Seniors Championship – losing out to eventual champion Thornton.
The Northern Irish ace starts his latest campaign against Welsh newcomer Rowlands – who defeated Kevin Burness 6-3 in the final of the penultimate qualifier a fortnight ago.
Another potentially close-run battle sees former Players Champion Kevin Painter take on 2023 World Seniors Matchplay finalist Jim McEwan.
Painter, who was famously beaten by Phil Taylor in an epic sudden death final here back in 2004, has reached back-to-back World Seniors Championship semi-finals, only to be halted by Thornton on both occasions.
The Artist faces a formidable opening test against Scottish star McEwan – who came through Qualifier Four to seal his debut appearance in this event, having previously won two World Seniors Tour events and two Modus Super Series titles.
Elsewhere, four-time Women’s World Champion Lisa Ashton faces Welsh qualifier Mike Huntley.
Ashton, who reached the semi-finals of the recent WDF Women’s World Championship and is a 15-time PDC Women’s Series title winner, was narrowly denied by Neil Duff in a deciding set here 12 months ago.
Huntley was involved in a gruelling fifth set tie break with 1983 World Champion Keith Deller on his debut last year and came out on the wrong side, but has again come through the qualifiers to give himself a shot at redemption.
The action gets under way from 1pm GMT, with First Round ties to be contested over the best of five sets. The deciding set of any match must be won by two clear legs, until the score line reaches 5-5, when the 11th leg will be sudden death.
