World Seniors Championship 2024 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play
Phil Taylor commences his final World Seniors Championship campaign at the Circus Tavern on Friday as the First Round action continues.
Taylor announced in November that 2024 would be his final year competing in televised events as he officially brings the curtain down on an illustrious career spanning five decades.
The Power picked up 11 of his 16 world titles at the Circus Tavern and will look to roll back the years in a bid to claim a first World Seniors crown.
Twice a runner-up in World Seniors majors in 2022, Taylor has fallen at the quarter-final hurdle in both of his World Seniors Championship campaigns and marks his return with a tie against German debutant Manfred Bilderl.
Soft-tip star Bilderl, who has previously competed in the German Superleague and on the PDC European Tour, becomes the first German to appear in a televised World Seniors event and is out to tear up the script in what is undoubtedly the most notable match of his career to date.
Meanwhile, the afternoon session sees defending champion Robert Thornton begin his bid for a hat-trick World Seniors Championship titles with a clash against debutant Martyn Turner.
Thornton boasts a ten-match unbeaten record in this competition and is the joint most successful player in the brief history of the World Seniors, having also won the 2022 World Matchplay.
The tenacious Scot opens up against Yorkshire left-hander Turner – who came through the first qualifying event last month to seal his spot in this event, having also featured in December’s WDF World Championship.
Richie Burnett is one of nine newcomers in this year’s field, and the 1995 Lakeside Champion starts out with a showdown against 1983 World Champion Keith Deller.
Burnett dropped off the PDC circuit at the end of last season despite enjoying a resurgent run to the quarter-finals of last year’s UK Open, but he has begun 2024 in fine style, winning a Challenge Tour title.
The Prince of Wales received a late call-up to compete as a top-up on the ProTour on Tuesday and will look to utilise that match sharpness against 64-year-old Deller – who recently received an MBE in the 2024 New Year Honours.
More than 40 years on from his historic world title triumph over Eric Bristow, ‘Mr 138’ remains as passionate as ever about the sport and recently competed in a WDF event in Las Vegas.
Three-time Lakeside Champion Martin Adams takes on three-time Women’s World Championship finalist Deta Hedman.
Adams, 67, finished runner-up in the inaugural World Seniors Championship two years ago and was a semi-finalist in last year’s Champion of Champions.
Wolfie was beaten in straight sets in Round Two by Leonard Gates at the Circus Tavern 12 months ago and starts his latest campaign against one of the stalwarts of women’s darts since the 1970s.
Hedman, twice a World Masters winner, is seeking her second win on the World Seniors tour, having beaten Trina Gulliver in the 2022 World Matchplay, and was a quarter-finalist in the recent WDF Women’s World Championship.
The evening session commences with a tasty tie between three-time World Seniors major winner Gates and Northern Irish ace Colin McGarry.
Gates emerged as the dominant force on the Seniors circuit last year, storming to glory in three consecutive TV events – the Champion of Champions, World Masters and World Matchplay.
The 53-year-old American, who was denied by Richie Howson in last year’s semi-finals here, warmed up for his return in perfect fashion by coming through the Rileys qualifiers to book his place in next month’s UK Open.
McGarry suffered an agonising 3-2 defeat to Phil Taylor in last year’s First Round and has produced a number of impressive displays on both floor and stage in recent years, notably reaching the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Seniors Matchplay.
Darryl Fitton, the number 14 seed, kicks off with a clash against two-time Lakeside semi-finalist Chris Mason.
Fitton, winner of the BDO World Trophy in 2016, reached the quarter-finals of last year’s World Seniors Championship, defeating former World Champions Les Wallace and John Part along the way.
Mason’s debut World Seniors Championship campaign ended in a narrow deciding set defeat to Terry Jenkins 12 months ago, but he impressed during the World Seniors Masters, defeating Trina Gulliver before being edged out in a seventh set decider by eventual champion Gates.
The final match of the evening sees home favourite Richie Howson take on three-time World Champion Part.
Howson has proved to be one of the biggest success stories of the World Seniors tour, storming to six floor titles and finishing runner-up in three televised events in 2023.
The Owl was denied the world title by Thornton in last year’s final here, having toppled Taylor along the way, before finishing runner-up to Gates in both the Champion of Champions and World Masters.
Canadian legend Part has fallen at the Second Round hurdle in both of his World Seniors Championship campaigns but defeated Kevin Painter in last year’s World Seniors Masters and came through Stage One of the recent PDC Qualifying School.
The action gets under way from 1pm GMT, with First Round ties to be contested over the best of five sets. The deciding set of any match must be won by two clear legs, until the score line reaches 5-5, when the 11th leg will be sudden death.
