The draw for the 2023 WDF World Championship has been confirmed, with a number of tasty ties on the cards at Lakeside.
The WDF’s flagship event will take place from December 2-10 at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green as 48 men and 24 women compete for the respective titles and total prize fund of £257,000.
Neil Duff claimed the men’s title after he defeated France’s Thibault Tricole by six sets to five in a dramatic final in April 2022, while Beau Greaves whitewashed Kirsty Hutchinson 4-0 to become women’s World Champion for the first time.
Both will return to defend their titles this year, with Greaves having turned down a place in the PDC World Championship in order to do so.
Duff will launch his campaign against either Moreno Blom of the Netherlands or Hungary’s Gabor Takacs in the Last 32.
Greaves, meanwhile, awaits the winner of the First Round tie between Lorraine Hyde and Laura Turner.
The men’s field is headed by Belgium’s Andy Baetens – who opens up against either Scott Marsh of emerging Polish star Sebastian Bialecki.
Jelle Klaasen, the 2006 Lakeside Champion, marks his return to the scene of his greatest triumph with a clash against Romania’s Laszlo Kadar or Sweden’s Edwin Torbjornsson.
France’s Tricole, last year’s runner-up, will take on either three-time World Seniors televised event winner Leonard Gates or Brian Corbett of New Zealand.
American ace Danny Lauby will face either Jamie Lewis, a former PDC World Championship semi-finalist, or Dutch qualifier Jarno Bottenberg.
Wesley Plaisier, a regular on the PDC circuit this year, marks his Lakeside debut with a tie against either veteran David Prins or Reece Colley.
James Hurrell, the number four seed, starts out against either Jordan Brooks or Dennis Nilsson, while Hong Kong’s Kai Fan Leung meets either Switzerland’s Thomas Junghans or former UK Open semi-finalist David Pallett.
The women’s draw sees four-time World Champion Lisa Ashton take on either Kym Mitchell or Priscilla Steenbergen, while fourth seed Deta Hedman awaits the winner of the tie between Aletta Wajer and Paula Jacklin.
The WDF has confirmed a new ‘hybrid strategy’ for broadcasting the event, which will see all matches streamed live on YouTube, while the event will also be available to view on Ayozat TV in the UK, as well as Fubo TV and Swerve Sports in the USA.
The final three days of the tournament, which was shown live on Eurosport and Discovery+ in 2022, are set to be broadcast on further outlets, which are yet to be confirmed by the WDF.
The playing format is to be retained from last year’s staging, with men’s First Round ties to be contested over the best of three sets and Second Round best of five.
The full schedule of play is set be released on Friday November 3.
