Field confirmed for 2023 WDF Lakeside World Championship

The field of players for 2023 WDF World Championship has been confirmed ahead of the draw on Wednesday.

The WDF’s flagship event will take place from December 2-10 at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green as 48 men and 24 women compete for the respective titles and total prize fund of £257,000.

Neil Duff claimed the men’s title after he defeated France’s Thibault Tricole by six sets to five in a dramatic final in April 2022, while Beau Greaves whitewashed Kirsty Hutchinson 4-0 to become women’s World Champion for the first time.

Both will return to defend their titles this year, with Greaves having turned down a place in the PDC World Championship in order to do so.

The draw will be released on YouTube at 7pm GMT on Wednesday November 1, with the schedule of play to be released on Friday.

The men’s field is headed by Belgium’s Andy Baetens – one of 16 seeded players who will enter in the Last 32 – which also include 2006 Lakeside Champion Jelle Klaasen, World Masters champion Wesley Plaisier, American ace Danny Lauby and defending champion Duff.

Three-time World Seniors televised event winner Leonard Gates is among those ranked 17-32 who will start out in the First Round, including former PDC World Championship semi-finalist Jamie Lewis, former PDC Tour Card holder James Richardson and Germany’s Liam Maendl-Lawrance.

Former UK Open semi-finalist David Pallett, Polish star Sebastian Białecki and Swedish veteran Dennis Nilsson are among those ranked 33-48.

Having won the PDC Challenge Tour, Berry van Peer declined the invitation to compete at Lakeside in favour of playing in the PDC World Championship, while Brandon Weening and Ky Smith also declined their invitations for personal reasons.

The women’s draw is headed by top seed and defending champion Greaves, second seed Aileen de Graaf and four-time World Champion Lisa Ashton.

Deta Hedman, Rhian O’Sullivan and Lorraine Winstanley are also among the eight seeds who will enter at the Last 16 stage.

Last year’s runner-up Kirsty Hutchinson is among those ranked 9-16 who will enter at the First Round stage, alongside the likes of Kym Mitchell, Lorraine Hyde and Jo Clements.

Players ranked 17-24 include Paula Jacklin, Hungary’s Veronika Ihász, Priscilla Steenbergen and Laura Turner.

The WDF has confirmed a new ‘hybrid strategy’ for broadcasting the event, which will see all matches streamed live on YouTube, while the event will also be available to view on Ayozat TV in the UK, as well as Fubo TV and Swerve Sports in the USA.

The final three days of the tournament, which was shown live on Eurosport and Discovery+ in 2022, are set to be broadcast on further outlets, which are yet to be confirmed by the WDF.

The playing format is to be retained from last year’s staging, with First Round ties to be contested over the best of three sets.
