PDC Order of Merit following the 2023 World Matchplay | Aspinall rises to world number five
Nathan Aspinall has climbed to a career-high fifth in the PDC Order of Merit following his fairy-tale World Matchplay triumph in Blackpool.
Four years on from winning the UK Open, Aspinall secured his second major televised ranking title at the Winter Gardens, becoming the 12th different winner in the 30-year history of the World Matchplay.
The Stockport star emphatically thrashed Jonny Clayton 18-6 in the final on Sunday to clinch the £200,000 top prize, reeling off 11 consecutive legs midway through the contest.
Aspinall, who had lost in his last three major finals, returned to the winner’s circle in style by lifting the Phil Taylor Trophy, climbing four places in the PDC Order of Merit as a result.
Clayton’s spirited run to a third major ranking final saw him pocket £100,000 in prize money, cementing his position as world number seven.
Despite a shock First Round exit at the hands of Brendan Dolan, Michael van Gerwen climbs above Peter Wright back in to the world number two spot, with ‘Snakebite’ having failed to defend his title-winning prize money from two years ago.
2019 champion Rob Cross, who was beaten by Daryl Gurney in Round One, drops three places to eighth in the world rankings, with a resurgent Gurney climbing two places to 26th.
Joe Cullen’s superb run to the Semi-Finals, which included an epic tie break win over Gerwyn Price, sees him climb three places to 11th.
Australian ace Damon Heta, who reached the Quarter-Finals in Blackpool for the first time, moves up one place to 12th, while 2020 champion Dimitri van den Bergh drops three places to 13th and Dave Chisnall falls two places to 14th.
Masters champion Chris Dobey climbs a further two places to 19th as he continues to close in on the elite top 16, while Gary Anderson and Andrew Gilding climb one spot apiece to 21st and 22nd respectively.
Krzysztof Ratajski, semi-finalist at the World Matchplay in 2021, drops four places to 23rd, while Callan Rydz – who was beaten by Ratajski in the Quarter-Finals that year – is down three places to 29th after failing to qualify.
Multiple PDC major finalist Mervyn King drops out of the world’s top 32 for the first time since joining the PDC in 2007 after failing to qualify for this year’s World Matchplay.
Steve Beaton’s 22nd World Matchplay appearance sees him surge six places to 47th, while Ian White drops four places to 46th.
Jermaine Wattimena, who also failed to make this year’s World Matchplay, tumbles seven places to 54th, while Devon Petersen falls a further six places to 75th and faces a battle to save his Tour Card come the end of the season.
