World Seniors Champion of Champions 2023 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play
The final four face off for the right to claim the inaugural World Seniors Champion of Champions title in Blackpool on Sunday.
Two North Americans and two Englishmen comprise the Semi-Final line-up at VIVA! Blackpool as they bid to become the first name on the new trophy.
Saturday saw a clutch of big names bow out at the first hurdle, leaving the door open for a potential new World Seniors winner to be crowned.
The Semi-Finals and final will take place in one bumper afternoon session by the seaside over an extended legs format.
The opening Semi sees World Seniors Championship finalist Richie Howson take on reigning World Seniors Master David Cameron.
Howson has made a name for himself since the inception of the World Seniors tour last year, winning back-to-back qualifying events prior to the World Championship and notably defeating Phil Taylor en route to the final in front of his home crowd in Purfleet.
The Owl avenged his defeat to Robert Thornton in last month’s final by prevailing 10-6 in their rematch on Saturday and now comes up against Cameron for the third time in a televised Seniors event.
Cameron prevailed in their Semi-Final clash at the World Seniors Masters, before Howson gained revenge in a fifth set decider at The Circus Tavern last month.
Cameron, who claimed his first televised title in fairy-tale fashion at Lakeside last May, punished a struggling Kevin Painter to run out a 10-5 winner in his opener on Saturday.
The second Semi-Final sees three-time BDO World Champion Martin Adams take on Golden Ticket winner Leonard Gates.
Gates came through Friday’s qualifier with a Semi-Final average of 109 along the way, defeating the likes of Co Stompe and Ronnie Baxter to seal his spot in the main draw.
The American ace then pulled off a hard-fought 10-8 victory over 16-time World Champion Phil Taylor with the aid of three ton-plus checkouts.
Gates reached the Semi-Finals on his debut at the Circus Tavern, defeating Tony O’Shea, Martin Adams and Darryl Fitton before eventually falling to Howson.
Adams was runner-up in the 2022 World Seniors Championship and went on to reach the Semi-Finals of the World Seniors Matchplay in Hull.
The 66-year-old held off a stern test from Trina Gulliver in Saturday’s Quarter-Finals to eventually overcome the ten-time Women’s World Champion 10-7 with an average of 87.
The action gets under way at 12pm GMT, with both the Semi-Finals and final to be contested over the best of 25 legs.
