Gibraltar Darts Trophy 2022 | Day One Preview and Order of Play
The 2022 Gibraltar Darts Trophy gets under way on Friday as the qualifiers collide in Round One.
The 13th and final European Tour event of the year features 48 players battling it out for £140,000 in prize money at the Victoria Stadium from October 14-16.
The top 16 players from the ProTour Order of Merit (as of July 26) are seeded and enter at the Second Round stage on Saturday, while 32 qualifiers battle it out for the right to join them.
Following this weekend’s event, the top 32 players on the European Order of Merit will qualify for the European Championship in Dortmund later this month.
The afternoon session on Day One features a host of local hopefuls aiming to make their mark, including 20-year-old Craig Galliano – who opens up against Belgian veteran Mario Vandenbogaerde.
Galliano’s World Cup of Darts team-mate Justin Hewitt is also in action as he takes on former Lakeside World Champion Steve Beaton.
Also among the six Host Nation qualifiers are Manuel Vilerio and Sean Negrette – who will take on Jason Lowe and Kenny Neyens respectively.
Former BDO world finalist and ProTour event winner Jim Williams faces two-time Euro Tour runner-up William O’Connor – with both players chasing a European Championship spot.
Former World Cup of Darts winner John Henderson starts out against fellow Tour Card qualifier Ritchie Edhouse, while Canadian number one Jeff Smith faces Associate Member qualifier Wesley Plaisier – who needs to reach the Last 16 in order to keep his European Championship hopes alive.
Rusty-Jake Rodriguez, one of three Austrians in this week’s field, takes on Finland’s Marko Kantele – making his Euro Tour return as the Nordic & Baltic qualifier.
The evening session features a show-down between last year’s beaten finalist Mensur Suljovic and a resurgent former World Youth Champion – Keegan Brown.
German number two Martin Schindler takes on crowd favourite Vincent van der Voort – who currently occupies the penultimate qualification spot for the European Championship.
A clash of two exciting young guns sees European Matchplay finalist Rowby-John Rodriguez take on UK Open semi-finalist Keane Barry.
Chris Dobey, quarter-finalist in last week’s World Grand Prix, opens up against Euro Tour debutant Dylan Duo Jr – son of the former PDC professional.
One of the stand-out ties of the night sees former Euro Tour winner Daryl Gurney take on former BDO World Champion Stephen Bunting, with both having suffered Second Round exits at the recent World Grand Prix.
Two emerging talents vying to clinch a European Championship spot go head-to-head as six-time Development Tour winner Ryan Meikle takes on 2022 World Youth finalist Josh Rock.
The enigmatic Dyson Parody, one of the six Host Nation qualifiers and a stalwart of this event, takes on former ProTour event winner Ryan Joyce, while Gabriel Clemens, who reached his first Euro Tour Quarter-Final in Belgium last time out, meets two-time Challenge Tour event winner Adam Hunt.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with First Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
