Peter Wright has regained the PDC world number one spot following the 2022 World Grand Prix in Leicester.

Reigning World Champion Wright has once again leapfrogged rival Gerwyn Price into the number one ranking on the Main Order of Merit following his run to the Semi-Finals of the double-start event last week.

Price, who picked up the Grand Prix title two years ago, needed to regain the trophy in order to remain world number one, but also fell at the Semi-Final hurdle.

Wright’s run was ended by a ruthless 4-0 whitewash at the hands of eventual champion Michael van Gerwen, while Price went down 4-2 to Nathan Aspinall.

Price faces a crucial run-in between now and the end of the season, with £500,000 to defend against his ranking from his World Championship triumph in January 2021.

Wright, meanwhile, is defending £120,000 later this month from his European Championship crown in 2020, as well as £25,000 in November from reaching the Semi-Finals of the 2020 Players Championship Finals.

Van Gerwen’s sixth Grand Prix success has seen him close the gap on the top two, adding to his World Matchplay triumph in July and his unranked Premier League title in June.

The remainder of the top eight remains unchanged following the World Grand Prix, while Danny Noppert has moved above Gary Anderson into ninth and Aspinall has climbed five places to 11th courtesy of his resurgent run to the final in Leicester.

Dirk van Duijvenbode, the 2020 Grand Prix runner-up, has fallen three places to 16th following his First Round exit this year, while Ross Smith is up five places to 27th after reaching the Last 16 for the second successive year.

Simon Whitlock’s failure to qualify for the Grand Prix having reached the Semi-Finals two years ago has seen him drop four places to 30th, while Madars Razma’s debut run to the Quarter-Finals sees him climb five places to 36th.

Martin Lukeman, who also reached the Last Eight in his debut appearance, surges 16 places to 43rd as he continues his meteoric rise this season.

Devon Petersen has slipped out of the top 32 into 33rd and also failed to come through to the weekend’s African qualifier for the World Championship, meaning he has work to do if he is to secure a return to Ally Pally in December.

Jeffrey de Zwaan, quarter-finalist in 2020, has fallen 11 places to 62nd after his failure to qualify, putting his Tour Card status in jeopardy come the end of the campaign.

Ryan Joyce and Glen Durrant have dropped three and four places respectively after also failing to qualify for this year’s World Grand Prix – which featured a record prize fund of £600,000.
