European Darts Matchplay 2022 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play
The seeded players commence their European Darts Matchplay campaigns in Trier on Saturday as the Second Round action takes centre stage.
The ninth Euro Tour event of the season features 45 players battling it out for £140,000 in prize money, with 13 qualifiers having progressed through Friday’s opening round, while three received byes.
Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright and Michael Smith withdrew prior to the draw, meaning Chris Dobey, Stephen Bunting and Daryl Gurney were promoted into seeded places.
Gerwyn Price is the number one seed as he bids for a second Euro Tour title of the season and starts out with a clash against Austrian ace Rowby-John Rodriguez – who dispatched Danny Noppert in Round One.
Luke Humphries begins his quest for a fourth Euro Tour triumph of the year with a tie against WDF World Championship semi-finalist Cameron Menzies – who averaged 101.6 in a 6-3 success over Niels Zonneveld on Friday.
Premier League runner-up Joe Cullen opens up with a tough test against former top 16 star Ian White – who thrashed Joe Murnan 6-1 with a 96 average in his opener.
Former Premier League champion Jonny Clayton comes up against recent Players Championship event winner and Challenge Tour leader Scott Williams – who is chasing down a spot in the World Matchplay later this month.
Back-to-back World Series event winner Dimitri Van den Bergh aims to silence the home crowd by denying German number three Florian Hempel.
Home hero Martin Schindler, the number 13 seed, takes on in-form Latvian World Cup star Madars Razma, while last weekend’s Dutch Masters finalist Dirk van Duijvenbode meets Dutch compatriot Jeffrey de Zwaan in what promises to be a heavy-scoring epic.
Former Euro Tour event winner Daryl Gurney starts out against German number one Gabriel Clemens, while the afternoon session features a clash between number two seed Ryan Searle and Martin Lukeman – runner-up in the German Darts Grand Prix earlier this year.
Reigning European Champion Rob Cross faces former BDO World Trophy winner James Wilson, as former UK Open champion Nathan Aspinall meets an in-form Jermaine Wattimena – who defeated Clayton in last week’s Dutch Masters.
Recent World Cup of Darts winner Damon Heta returns to action to face World Championship quarter-finalist and former ProTour winner Callan Rydz, while former Grand Slam champion Jose de Sousa faces a tricky opener against Dutch qualifier Wesley Plaisier – who knocked out Jamie Hughes in Round One.
Former Lakeside Champion Stephen Bunting aims to avoid a potential scalp at the hands of Polish teenager Sebastian Bialecki – the UK Open quarter-finalist who defeated Mervyn King on Friday.
Chris Dobey, the number 14 seed, looks to defy the partisan home crowd when he faces Lukas Wenig – who saw off Steve Lennon in Round One.
The opening match of the afternoon sees former Gibraltar Trophy winner Krzysztof Ratajski take on world number 51 Luke Woodhouse.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Second Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
