Kevin Painter pulled off a straight sets rout of Phil Taylor in the Quarter-Finals of the 2022 World Seniors Championship at The Circus Tavern on Saturday.
Painter went into the contest on the back of a staggering 30-match winless run against Taylor, stretching back to 2001, but ended the wait in style by sweeping aside the 16-time World Champion for the loss of just three legs.
Former Players Champion Painter, who whitewashed Wayne Warren in nine consecutive legs on Friday, secured the opening set 3-1 before coasting to the second without reply.
Taylor produced a 119 checkout as he rallied to force a third set decider, but ‘The Artist’ crushed any chances of a fightback by closing out victory in the fifth leg.
“It wasn’t a classic game, everyone expected it to be nuts but it’s nice to just win the game,” said Painter.
“Me and Phil have had many battles here down the years, neither of us are as good as we used to be but it’s just nice to get a win.
“I’d have liked to have beaten Phil three-nil when he was at his peak but you’re still playing who you’re playing.
“I didn’t know what to expect from Phil. Obviously he will be disappointed but I just had to play my game.”
Painter will now face Robert Thornton in Sunday afternoon’s Semi-Finals after the Scotsman coasted past qualifier Dave Prins in straight sets.
Thornton maintained his perfect run at the Circus Tavern so far by making it three consecutive victories without dropping a set as he averaged 91 in another solid display.
Five-time Lakeside qualifier Prins had earlier stormed to a 3-0 victory over three-time World Champion John Lowe in nine consecutive legs.
Three-time BDO World Champion Martin Adams sealed his spot in the Semi-Finals with a 3-1 success over former World Matchplay winner Larry Butler.
Adams, who had edged out home favourite Richie Howson in a deciding set on Friday night, recovered from a set down to reel off three on the spin for victory over America’s Butler.
Butler had battled his way into the Last Eight courtesy of a dramatic tie break win over 1983 World Champion Keith Deller.
Deller took the first set in a decider but was left to rue missed opportunities to press home his advantage throughout the contest as Butler dragged himself over the line.
Adams will now meet Terry Jenkins in the Last Four after the nine-time major finalist clinched victories over Lisa Ashton and John Walton on a memorable day in Purfleet.
Jenkins began the day with a 3-1 success over four-time Women’s World Champion Ashton with an 86.5 average before producing a 135 checkout in defeating 2001 Lakeside champion Walton in the evening.
Walton had opened up with a 3-1 victory over three-time World Champion John Part in the Second Round.
Sunday sees the inaugural World Seniors Championship draw to a close with the Semi-Finals in the afternoon, followed by the final over the best of nine sets in the evening.
