The Second Round action draws to a close at the WDF World Championship on Wednesday as a host of rising stars aim to continue their progress at Lakeside.

Three Last 16 places remain up for grabs in the men’s draw, while four quarter-final spots are still be determined in the women’s competition.

All eyes will once again be on 15-year-old Mitchell Lawrie as he bids to extend his historic debut campaign when he takes on second seed Jason Brandon.

Less than a month on from his 15th birthday, Lawrie eclipsed Luke Littler’s record as the youngest player ever to compete in a Lakeside Championship, and the Scottish sensation announced his arrival in style with a straight sets rout of Tomoya Maruyama.

Lawrie landed a ten-darter and a brace of 145 checkouts en route to victory with a 90.5 average and has subsequently been installed as the new bookmaker’s favourite for the title.

However, the reigning Welsh Open and British Open champion faces a tough assignment against American ace Brandon – who reached the semi-finals here 12 months ago and defeated Stephen Bunting in this year’s US Darts Masters.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Paige Pauling takes on last year’s runner-up Sophie McKinlay in a fascinating Last 16 tie in the women’s event.

The duo met in the final of the girls’ event in 2024, with Pauling securing a straight sets victory to clinch the title, though McKinlay enjoyed a fabulous run to the final of the women’s event in her debut campaign, eventually losing out to Beau Greaves.

Two-time Women’s World Champion Mikuru Suzuki takes on three-time women’s world finalist Deta Hedman in another unmissable tie.

Suzuki saw off Kirsi Viinikainen in a deciding set on her Lakeside return, while third seed Hedman is the current WDF Women’s number one having added a host of ranking titles to her haul this year.

Sixth seed David Fatum marks his Lakeside debut with a showdown against 19-year-old Jenson Walker.

Fatum, 57, competed in the first PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace in 2008 and rolled back the years by reaching the final of this year’s Dutch Open.

Walker stormed to a straight sets win over Jiří Brejcha in round one but will be keen to improve on his match average of 84 if he is to continue his progress.

The opening match of the night sees Switzerland’s Junghans take on Ireland’s Stephen Rosney.

Junghans, the number 14 seed, enjoyed a fine run to the quarter-finals here 12 months ago and was also a quarter-finalist in this year’s Dutch Open.

Rosney, who came through the qualifiers to reach the main draw, marked his Lakeside debut with a straight sets scalp of Jim McEwan on Sunday.

The action gets under way from 6pm GMT, with men’s second round ties to be contested over the best of five sets and women’s second round ties to be contested over the best of three sets.
