The 2023 WDF World Championship gets under way at Lakeside on Saturday with a bumper double session of First Round action.

The second staging of the WDF World Championship features 78 players competing for the men’s and women’s titles at the iconic Lakeside Country Club from December 2-10.

The top 16 seeds in the men’s draw and the top eight seeds in the women’s draw will enter at the Second Round stage, with a series of tournament winners and qualifiers battling it out for the right to join them.

The opening tie of the tournament sees Polish star Sebastian Białecki take on England’s Scott Marsh.

Białecki narrowly missed out on a place in the PDC World Championship, losing in the final of the East European qualifier last week, but his 2022 Denmark Open title assured him of a debut at Lakeside.

Four times a PDC Development Tour winner and a quarter-finalist in last year’s UK Open, Białecki starts out against Marsh – a regular on the PDC Challenge Tour who was beaten by Andy Baetens in the Third Round of last year’s WDF World Championship.

Elsewhere, Durham veteran Dave Prins – the 2022 Isle of Man Open winner – opens up against 24-year-old debutant Reece Colley – last year’s British Open champion.

Scottish Open champion Jordan Brooks faces Sweden’s Dennis Nilsson – who has previously competed in the PDC World Championship, World Cup of Darts and on the European Tour.

Aaron Turner, who featured at Lakeside last year and has appeared in four UK Opens, meets Sweden’s Ricky Nauman – winner of the Finnish Open back in 2018.

The opening women’s match of the tournament sees Jo Clements – the 2022 Slovak Open winner – take on Hungary’s Veronika Ihász – who landed the highest checkout (164) in the history of the Women’s World Championship last year in a narrow 2-1 defeat to Beau Greaves.

Paula Murphy of the USA then comes up against Spain’s Almudena Fajardo – runner-up in the 2022 Europe Cup singles.

The evening session kicks off with a clash between former PDC Challenge Tour event winner James Richardson and Austria’s Christian Goedl.

Richardson has competed in four PDC World Championships, famously defeating Raymond van Barneveld in 2012, while Goedl is making his Lakeside debut, having lost out in the final of East Europe Qualifier for Ally Pally last year.

Dutch ace Arjan Konterman, who finished 28th in this year’s PDC Challenge Tour Order of Merit, opens up against Australia’s Danny Porter.

Hungary’s Patrik Kovacs, a four-time World Cup of Darts participant, faces ‘Captain America’ Jim Widmayer – making his fourth Lakeside appearance.

Shaun McDonald, a PDC Challenge Tour event winner in 2021, starts out against Aussie ace Jonny Tata – a truck driver who sensationally defeated Peter Wright 6-3 in August’s New Zealand Masters.

In the women’s draw, Aletta Wajer of the Netherlands marks her Lakeside debut with a tie against 66-year-old Paula Jacklin – aiming to register her first win in a World Championship at the seventh attempt.

Scotland’s Lorraine Hyde, quarter-finalist in the 2022 World Masters and 2023 Dutch Open, takes on Laura Turner – who reached the Last Eight of the 2020 BDO World Championship.

The action gets under way from 1pm GMT, with all First Round matches to be contested over the best of three sets (best of five legs per set).
