World Series of Darts Finals 2024 | Day Three Preview and Order of Play

The 2024 World Series Finals draws to a close in Amsterdam on Sunday as the final eight face off for the £80,000 title.

Six of the top eight seeds plus a further two former major winners are left standing after a high quality opening two days at the AFAS Live.

Michael van Gerwen has been the dominant force in this tournament over the past decade with five titles to his name, and the defending champion looks to remain on course for a super sixth when he meets Luke Humphries in the quarter-finals.

The match signals a repeat of July’s World Matchplay final which saw Humphries prevail 18-15 to become champion for the first time and make it five televised ranking titles in less than 12 months.

The world number one picked up his first World Series title at the New Zealand Masters last month and has registered customary ton-plus averages in defeating Haupai Puha and Damon Heta so far this weekend.

Home favourite Van Gerwen secured his only PDC title this season to date at the Dutch Masters back in January and put a remarkable 20 points on his First Round average as he followed up a hard-fought win over Jonny Clayton with a 6-3 success over Danny Noppert on Saturday, averaging 106.2.

The opening match of the afternoon sees Premier League champion Luke Littler take on former Masters champion Chris Dobey.

Littler is aiming to add to his two World Series titles and two European Tour titles this year and averaged 103 and 102 in seeing off Ross Smith and Raymond van Barneveld respectively.

The World Championship finalist and number one seed now meets PDC Order of Merit qualifier Dobey – who has marked his first appearance in this event since 2017 with close-run wins over Dimitri van den Bergh and Boris Krcmar, notably averaging 104 in the latter tie.

European Champion Peter Wright, who returned to the winner’s enclosure on the European Tour a fortnight ago, aims to continue his superb resurgence by overcoming two-time major winner Daryl Gurney.

Wright endured a torrid Premier League campaign, as well as a First Round exit at the World Matchplay, but his recaptured his brilliant best form and has dropped a total of just three legs in dispatching Dave Chisnall and Jeff Smith this weekend.

Gurney, who came through the Tour Card holder qualifier to seal a place in this event, is into his second televised quarter-final of the year following victories over home hero Dirk van Duijvenbode and former champion Gerwyn Price.

Former World Champions Michael Smith and Rob Cross then go head-to-head in a repeat of their World Matchplay quarter-final two months ago.

Smith comfortably came out on top 16-7 on that occasion after Cross squandered 27 darts at doubles, and ‘Voltage’ will be out to avenge that result and improve his accuracy on the outer ring.

Smith survived a match dart from Jose De Sousa in Round One before edging out Dutch youngster Wessel Nijman by the same scoreline in the Last 16, while Cross followed up a routine 6-2 win over Simon Whitlock with a narrow 6-5 success over Kevin Doets on Saturday.

The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Quarter-Final ties to contested over the best of 19 legs and Semi-Finals and the final best of 21.
