World Series of Darts Finals 2023 | Day Three Preview and Order of Play
The 2023 World Series of Darts Finals draw to a close on Sunday as the final eight compete for the title in Amsterdam.
The culmination of this year’s World Series will see the £70,000 top prize handed out at the AFAS Live, as six seeds, a qualifier and an invited player compete for glory.
The afternoon session plays host to the Quarter-Final ties, before the Semi-Finals and final follow in the evening session.
Home hero Raymond van Barneveld aims to delight the partisan Dutch crowd once again by overcoming sixth seed Peter Wright.
Van Barneveld, appearing in his first televised event in the Netherlands since 2019, has seen off US Masters finalist Jeff Smith and reigning World Champion Michael Smith to reach the Quarter-Finals of this event for the fourth time.
The five-time World Champion, who is back among the world’s top 32, is now bidding to equal his run to last year’s Grand Slam Semi-Finals.
Wright was runner-up in this event in 2015 and 2016 and has a World Series title to his name this season thanks to his exploits at the Nordic Masters back in January.
However, the colourful Scot is struggling for form on the big stage of late and averaged just 83.5 in a battling 6-4 win over New Zealand’s Haupai Puha on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Michael van Gerwen steps up his quest for a fifth World Series Finals title when he faces fellow Premier League star Dimitri van den Bergh.
Van Gerwen, who has claimed the US Masters and Poland Masters titles on the World Series this term, took an extended break from competitive action following a shock First Round defeat to Brendan Dolan at the World Matchplay.
The Dutch superstar recovered from 3-0 down to defeat William O’Connor 6-4 in his opener with the aid of a pivotal 161 checkout and now faces a player against whom he boasts a dominant record in front of the TV cameras.
Van den Bergh was runner-up here in 2021 and reached the final of this year’s Poland Masters, losing out to Van Gerwen in the final.
The Belgian, who averaged 97 in a 6-1 rout of Ricky Evans on Saturday, has lost all seven of his televised meetings with MVG this year, including a six-set whitewash in the Semi-Finals of the World Championship.
A repeat of May’s European Darts Grand Prix final kicks off proceedings as top seed Rob Cross comes up against Luke Humphries.
Cross defied a 104 average from Humphries in that final in Sindelfingen to claim his first European Tour title, though Humphries went on to land his fifth Euro Tour title at the next attempt.
Cross enjoyed a sensational trip Down Under last month, claiming back-to-back World Series titles in Wollongong and Hamilton and was a 6-3 winner over Jonny Clayton in Saturday’s opener.
Humphries, semi-finalist in July’s World Matchplay, produced the stand-out performance of the Second Round as he overcame German Open champion Krzysztof Ratajski 6-3 with a stunning 106.7 average.
Keegan Brown aims to pull off another memorable scalp when he takes on World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall.
The former World Youth champion, who came through the qualifiers to clinch a third appearance in this event, followed up a 6-1 thrashing of Simon Whitlock with a sensational 6-4 defeat of Gerwyn Price, landing a 164 checkout en route to reaching a first televised Quarter-Final since 2014.
Seventh seed Aspinall continued his recent dominance over Danny Noppert with a 6-3 success to reach this stage of the event for the second time and will feel he has a golden opportunity to challenge for a fourth televised title.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Quarter-Final matches to be contested over the best of 19 legs and the Semi-Finals and final best of 21.
