Nathan Aspinall withdraws from World Series of Darts Finals

Nathan Aspinall has withdrawn from the World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam and will be replaced by Andrew Gilding.
Aspinall has been out of action since his Second Round defeat to James Wade at the Betfred World Matchplay in July, having subsequently undergone treatment for a tendon injury in his throwing arm.
The former World Matchplay champion had hoped to be able to make his comeback in the World Series Finals at the AFAS Live this weekend, but he has been referred for further treatment following recent scans.
“I’ve said all along that I only want to return to playing once my arm has recovered sufficiently,” said Aspinall.
“I’ve been making good progress with my treatment but my latest scans have come back and I need more treatment this week, and reluctantly I will have to miss the World Series of Darts Finals.
“I’m getting closer to being able to play again and I hope I can get back to action soon – but only when I’m confident that I’ve recovered and won’t be risking further damage.”
Under PDC Rules, Aspinall is replaced by the highest-ranked player who lost in the final round of last month’s Tour Card Holder Qualifier, which means Gilding now takes on Dutch youngster Wessel Nijman in Round One on Saturday afternoon.
The £400,000 non-ranking tournament features the top eight players from the World Series Order of Merit joined by eight Tour Card holder qualifiers, plus a further nine World Series Order of Merit qualifiers, four PDC Order of Merit qualifiers and a further three PDC invites.
Michael van Gerwen is the defending champion after he defeated Aspinall 11-4 in last year’s final.
