Luke Humphries and Michael van Gerwen go head-to-head for the right to be crowned 2024 World Matchplay champion in Blackpool on Sunday.
After eight days of captivating competition at the Winter Gardens, the top two seeds are left to battle it out for the Phil Taylor trophy and £200,000 top prize.
For Van Gerwen it is familiar territory as he prepares for his fifth Betfred World Matchplay final, while Humphries is bidding to triumph in his first appearance at this stage of the competition.
Humphries returned to the Empress Ballroom on the back of his debut World Cup of Darts victory with Michael Smith last month and has continued his clinical recent record in televised tournaments, making it eight finals from his last ten appearances.
The runaway world number one boasts a tournament average of 102.4, threatening Phil Taylor’s stranglehold on the top five tournament averages in the history of the event.
He began by thrashing German debutant Ricardo Pietreczko 10-4, seeing off Stephen Bunting 11-7 and 2020 champion Dimitri van den Bergh 16-10.
The reigning World Champion then produced a timely late surge to overcome 2007 champion James Wade 17-10 in Saturday’s semi-finals and now stands on the brink of what would be a fifth major ranking title in the space of nine months.
Van Gerwen, meanwhile, is the only player alongside Taylor to have won this title on three or more occasions and is looking to add to his triumphs here in 2015, 2016 and 2022.
The world number two is seeking a first major ranking title since the 2022 Players Championship Finals and has defied the odds and the form book to storm through the bottom half of the draw bracket.
The Dutch sensation got off to a flying start by defeating Premier League champion Luke Littler 10-6 with a 102 average, before battling past Joe Cullen 11-8 and recovering from 8-6 down to defeat his 2023 UK Open nemesis Andrew Gilding 16-10.
Van Gerwen then defied a staggering 40 missed darts at doubles to defeat Michael Smith 17-13 with a 98.4 average and will be determined to brush up on his finishing this time around.
The recent head-to-head record makes for ominous reading for MVG – who has lost his last seven matches against Humphries in all competitions, including the Semi-Finals of the Premier League in May.
The final gets under way from 8pm BST and will be contested over the best of 35 legs.
The match will be extended, if necessary, for a maximum of six extra legs before a sudden death leg is required. For example, if the score reaches 20-20 then the 41st leg will be sudden death.
