Gerwyn Price and Luke Humphries set up World Grand Prix final rematch
Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price will collide in the 2026 World Grand Prix final after overcoming James Wade and Nathan Aspinall respectively on Saturday.
The decorated duo will face off in a repeat of the 2023 final at the Mattioli Arena which saw Humphries famously clinch his first major title.
World number two Humphries ended Wade’s hopes of a third World Grand Prix crown as he wrapped up a 5-3 success to reach a record fourth consecutive final in Leicester.
Humphries took the opening set before Wade hit back with a clinical 141 checkout en route to levelling up, and the pair exchanged sets again to leave the contest finely poised at two apiece.
Humphries’ doubling-in shone in the subsequent two sets, missing just two darts in the nine legs it took him to burst into a 4-2 lead, even if he was made to survive a set dart from Wade to level the contest at three-all.
Although Wade threatened a comeback by taking the seventh set, Humphries reeled off three legs straight to reach yet another double-start final.
“I’m really, really proud of myself for performing like that,” said Humphries.
“I’m proud of the way I’ve bounced back from a couple of bad performances in this tournament, but that was the real me there.
“Gezzy is playing well, but if I play like that again it’s going to be a cracking final, and I hope it is!
“To make four World Grand Prix finals on the trot is super special. It’s history for myself, and nobody has ever done it before, so I am proud of that.
“Unless I pick up that trophy, unfortunately that history doesn’t mean anything. I’ve come here to win the trophy.”
Price powered into a fourth World Grand Prix final following a 5-2 victory over Aspinall in a fierce contest, largely thanks to a stellar double-in success rate of 51 per cent.
The Welsh number one did the damage early in the piece, racing into a 3-0 lead amid a struggle on the outer ring from Aspinall.
Nevertheless, 2022 runner-up Aspinall rallied with an impressive spell, winning six of the next eight legs including a stunning 132 checkout to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
After a nervy sixth set that Price edged to go one away, the Welsh number one shored up a 5-2 triumph to reach a third consecutive major final after finishing runner-up at this year’s World Matchplay and World Series Finals.
After the contest, Price revealed: “Nathan was complaining about the crowd but they were on his side.
“I’m 3-0 up and I go back and say to Nathan “they’re on your side bud, come on. Stop performing on the board and just play darts.
“I was a little bit upset with him. As good as the crowd is for me, they were all for him. He’s performing a little bit on stage, I told him I wasn’t happy.
“I’m great friends with Nathan but sometimes you’ve just got to let your darts go. When you’re losing you’re losing.
“I was frustrated 90% of that game and it’s not good.
“I think it was a bit of a poor game, it was up and down.
“In patches, I’m playing well. When my game is there, I’m playing some of the best stuff in the world.
“I’m here to win trophies and money, but I’m into another final, third one on the bounce – happy days!”
