Premier League Darts 2025 Night 16 Preview and Order of Play | Aspinall and Van Gerwen set for Sheffield showdown
The league phase of the 2025 Premier League Darts season draws to a close in Sheffield on Thursday, with the final play-off spot up for grabs.
Luke Littler, Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price have already booked their place at The O2 next week, now Nathan Aspinall and Michael van Gerwen will battle it out for the right to join them.
Aspinall heads to South Yorkshire with the advantage, having beaten Van Gerwen en route to claiming last week’s title in Aberdeen.
That triumph moved ‘The Asp’ four points clear of MVG, meaning a fourth straight win over the Dutchman would be enough to see him secure play-off qualification for the third time.
The equation is also simple for Van Gerwen – he must clinch the nightly title in order to oust Aspinall and maintain his ever-present record at The O2.
Seven-time champion Van Gerwen, who has reached the final in nine of his 12 previous Premier League campaigns, is yet to pick up a weekly title this season, with just two finals to his name.
Aspinall has won four of their five meetings in this year’s competition and could finish as high as third in the table if he was to better Price’s results on the night.
Price, who has three nightly titles to his name this season, is looking to hold down third spot heading into only his second play-off campaign.
The Welshman sensationally landed his second nine-darter of this year’s event last time out, but could not avert a 6-4 defeat at the hands of Stephen Bunting.
Price looks to return to winning ways in the Steel City when he comes up against last week’s beaten finalist – Chris Dobey.
Dobey averaged 107 in a 6-2 rout of Rob Cross in last week’s quarter-finals, before pulling off another impressive deciding-leg victory over Littler.
However, the former Masters champion was thrashed 6-1 by Aspinall in the final despite averaging 98, but has climbed above Cross into sixth spot.
Defending champion Littler looks to set a yet another new record in this competition as he takes on Bunting in the opening match of the night.
Littler has racked up 40 points so far, equalling the record tally set by Jonny Clayton in 2022, and the 18-year-old would move into uncharted territory if he can overcome Bunting.
The reigning World Champion has claimed a record five weekly titles in 2025, as well as registering a record 162 maximums, and will await the player who finishes fourth in next week’s semi-finals.
Bunting is bidding to avoid finishing bottom of the table – where he languished since the opening night back in February.
After losing his first eight games, Bunting snapped that streak by winning Night Nine in Berlin, and has more recently reached back-to-back semi-finals to take his tally to 12 points.
Cross must equal or better Bunting’s result in Sheffield in order to avoid slipping to the foot of the table for the first time this season.
Cross is the only player in this year’s field yet to reach a weekly final and has lost six of his last seven matches in a disappointing second half of the campaign.
The 2018 World Champion will look to end on a high, but faces a formidable opener against world number one Humphries.
Humphries is guaranteed to finish in second place as he bids to go one better than last year’s runner-up spot to Littler at The O2, with the pair on a collision course for a potential re-run of that final.
Humphries played his part in arguably the greatest game ever seen in this Premier League format, averaging 110 in a 6-3 defeat to rival Littler – who averaged 116 in a breath-taking contest in Aberdeen.
Winner of three weekly titles, plus a further four final appearances, the reigning World Masters champion is out to go one better than his runner-up finish in Sheffield 12 months ago and head to finals night in style.
The action gets under way from 7pm BST, with all matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
