Gerwyn Price targeting Premier League play-offs: “It’s one of my main goals”
Gerwyn Price’s sights are firmly set on marking his Premier League return with a first appearance in the play-offs.
The world number one is back in the elite invitational event, having missed out 12 months ago after testing positive for COVID-19.
The bitter disappointment that Price subsequently endured left him unable to bring himself to even watch most of the competition, which was eventually won by his compatriot Jonny Clayton.
Nevertheless, the Iceman is back among the eight-man field for the new-look event for a fourth time as it returns to arenas across the UK, Ireland, Netherlands and Germany.
He is excited to launch his return on Thursday – and what he hopes will culminate in a first play-off appearance – with the support of his home crowd at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff.
Price takes on James Wade in his opening match and could set up a potential all-Welsh showdown with Clayton in the semis.
“It’s nice to be back in the Premier League having missed out last year, and to kick it off in Cardiff – there’s not a better place really for a Welshman,” he told Live Darts.
“I didn’t watch many games [last year]; I couldn’t put myself through it.
“I was gutted I couldn’t take part, but I’m back in this year and hopefully I can have a good run.
“I’ve not reached the top four since I’ve been in this competition, so it’s one of my main goals for the season.
“Not just because I’m Welsh, but I think Cardiff is probably one of the best venues for atmosphere.
“It’s nice to be here and have the support of the Welsh crowd; I’m looking forward to it.”
