The Third Round action draws to a close at the World Darts Championship on Sunday, while two tasty ties commence the Round of 16.

Four places remain up for grabs in the Fourth Round at Alexandra Palace as a host of in-form outsiders bid to join the big guns in the business end of the tournament.

The afternoon session features four unseeded players among those vying to progress, while the evening session sees a further two unseeded hopefuls battling it out before two mouth-watering fixtures kick off the Last 16.

UK Open champion Dimitri Van den Bergh takes on former World Championship quarter-finalist Callan Rydz in arguably the stand-out tie of the afternoon.

Eleventh seed Van den Bergh is under pressure to defend the prize money from his run to the semi-finals here two years ago and got off and running with a commanding straight sets win over Dylan Slevin before Christmas.

The Belgian picked up his second major title in Minehead back in March and has also reached the semi-finals of the World Grand Prix, Masters and World Cup of Darts.

Rydz produced the stand-out performance of the First Round as he thrashed Croatia’s Romeo Grbavac 3-0 with a 107 average, before repeating that scoreline against German number one Martin Schindler in Round Two despite averaging 16 points fewer.

Kevin Doets looks to extend his ground-breaking run at Ally Pally when he comes up against Polish number one – Krzysztof Ratajski.

Having suffered opening night heartbreak at the hands of Michael Smith 12 months ago, Doets gained his revenge by defeating the 2023 World Champion in a deciding set in Round Two, having opened up with a 3-1 win over Noa-Lynn van Leuven.

The heavy-scoring Dutchman is now provisionally ranked inside the world’s top 50 and will fancy his chances of claiming another seeded scalp against the world number 31.

Ratajski was a quarter-finalist here behind closed doors in 2020/21 but has not made it beyond the Third Round since and has failed to qualify for three TV ranking majors this season.

The former World Masters champion averaged 95.3 in a 3-1 success over Filipino debutant Alexis Toylo in his opener and is battling to retain his place in the world’s top 32.

Two giant-killers collide in the afternoon’s opener as Sweden’s Jeffrey de Graaf faces Paolo Nebrida of the Philippines.

De Graaf is appearing at this stage of the competition for the second successive year after pulling off a shock straight sets rout of two-time World Champion Gary Anderson seven days ago.

De Graaf is the lowest-ranked Tour Card holder left standing in the competition and will be out to avoid a banana skin of his own against the last Asian player in the field.

Nebrida had found himself on the wrong end of 3-2 defeats to Danny Jansen and Simon Whitlock in his first two World Championship appearances, but reversed that fortune by edging out Jim Williams in a decider this time around, before completing a stunning straight sets scalp of 19th seed Ross Smith in Round Two.

Crowd favourite Ricky Evans returns to the sport’s greatest stage to face in-form Welshman Robert Owen in the final tie of the Third Round.

Evans continued his love affair with the Ally Pally stage by knocking out sixth seed Dave Chisnall in a dramatic deciding set in the last session before Christmas.

The quick-fire Kettering thrower is now aiming to progress beyond the Third Round of the World Championship for the first time in ten attempts.

Owen secured his spot in the tournament following the suspension of Dom Taylor and has taken full advantage by defeating both Niels Zonneveld and Gabriel Clemens 3-1 to break new ground.

The 40-year-old looked set to lose his Tour Card at the end of the season, but is now provisionally inside the Tour Card places and would guarantee his survival on tour with a further win here.

The Last 16 line-up commences with an all-Welsh showdown between two-time World Cup of Darts winners Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price.

The duo meet on the World Championship stage for the first time since the 2016/17 event when Clayton prevailed 3-1 in his debut campaign.

Clayton is making his ninth World Championship appearance and is the number seven seed, having finished runner-up in this year’s Dutch Championship, while also picking up a ProTour title.

The tenacious Welshman is into the Last 16 for the fourth consecutive year, having battled through a nail-biting sudden death leg against Mickey Mansell before fending off a gallant fightback from Daryl Gurney from three sets down to clinch a narrow 4-3 win 48 hours ago.

Price is making his 11th World Championship appearance and is seeded tenth in the draw following a below-par year by his standards.

The seven-time major winner has failed to pick up a PDC ranking title for the first time since 2017, reaching just one final on the European Tour and one final on the ProTour.

Consequently, he came into the World Championship under the radar, but began with a commanding straight sets win over Keane Barry on Day Two of the tournament, before surviving a match dart from Joe Cullen to prevail in a sudden death thriller on Friday.

Reigning champion Luke Humphries then steps up the defence of his title with a clash against two-time World Champion Peter Wright.

The pair have been embroiled in a war of words in the build-up to the contest, with Wright sending out a message to both Humphries and Luke Littler following his opening win, and Humphries responding by accusing the Scot of “mind games” and claiming he has almost bettered his career achievements.

Humphries is bidding to join Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson as only the fourth player to successfully defend the PDC World Championship title and is yet to drop a set so far, having thrashed France’s Thibault Tricole 3-0 on opening night before whitewashing Nick Kenny 4-0 on Friday.

The world number one is now eight games unbeaten on the Ally Pally stage and will look to let his darts do the talking against an opponent who was visibly under the weather last time out.

Despite suffering with a chest infection, Wright dug deep to seal an impressive 4-2 win over in-form Jermaine Wattimena with a 96.2 average, and will be targeting more of the same as he bids to continue his timely resurgence.

Wright came into the competition in his lowest seeding position (17) in more than a decade after a tough year on the oche which has seen him fail to reach a televised ranking quarter-final for the first time since 2011.

The action gets under way from 12.30pm GMT, with Third Round and Last 16 matches to be contested over the best of seven sets, best of five legs per set.

The final set must be won by two clear legs, unless the score reaches 5-5, in which case a sudden death leg will be played.
