Luke Littler and Michael van Gerwen lock horns in a blockbuster World Darts Championship final at Alexandra Palace on Friday.

A final for the ages sees the prince of the palace face the three-time king bidding to regain the crown after a six-year absence.

Littler’s landmark run to the final on his debut 12 months ago catapulted him into the limelight, and the teenage sensation has not looked back, going on to enjoy a dream first season on the PDC circuit which has seen him claim the Premier League, World Series Finals and Grand Slam titles.

Provisionally ranked world number two, Littler is bidding to cap off his remarkable debut season by lifting the sport’s most iconic trophy and becoming its youngest ever World Champion in the process, a record which Van Gerwen holds at 24 years and nine months old when he won the title in 2014.

The Nuke got his campaign off and running with an emotional 3-1 victory over Ryan Meikle before Christmas, before comfortably dispatching Stoke veteran Ian White 4-1 with the aid of twelve 180s.

He then held off a spirited display from Ryan Joyce to edge through in a gripping seventh-set decider with a 103 average, before seeing off his stablemate Nathan Aspinall 5-2 in the quarter-finals on New Year’s Day with a 101.5 average.

A ninth ton-plus average on the Ally Pally stage followed as he stormed past Stephen Bunting 6-1 in the semi-finals with a 105.5 average, taking his tournament 180 tally to 64 in the process.

Littler, who celebrates his 18th birthday later this month, has become the first player since Phil Taylor in 1994/1995 to reach back-to-back World Championship finals in their first two appearances in the event and now has a chance to create a further slice of history,

Van Gerwen has competed in all 17 stagings of the World Championship since its move to Ally Pally and lifted the Sid Waddell Trophy in 2014, 2017 and 2019.

A winner of more than 150 titles worldwide, including a staggering 47 majors, ‘Mighty Mike’ has enjoyed more success than any other player in this competition and is vying to restore his former glories.

Despite being the number three seed, Van Gerwen came into the tournament on the back of a barren season by his high standards, with his runner-up spot at the World Matchplay marking his only appearance in a televised ranking final.

The Dutch icon began his campaign at Ally Pally with a routine straight sets win over debutant James Hurrell, before recovering from a set down to defeat Brendan Dolan 4-2 and holding off a mid-game revival from Jeffrey De Graaf to prevail by the same scoreline in the Last 16 with a 102 average.

He then produced his best performance of the tournament so far to end the run of in-form Callan Rydz, prevailing 5-3 with a 103 average in a contest which featured 31 maximums, before demolishing Chris Dobey 6-1 with a 98.8 average in the semi-finals 24 hours ago.

The 35-year-old is making his seventh appearance in a World Championship final appearance since 2013 and is out to avoid a third straight defeat in the final after finishing runner-up in 2020 and 2023.

Littler and Van Gerwen have met on 12 occasions over the past 12 months, with the head-to-head recording standing at six wins apiece.

Littler claimed glory in the Bahrain Masters final last January, before Van Gerwen exacted his revenge in the Dutch Masters final, while also prevailing 10-6 in the opening round of the World Matchplay.

The 2024/25 World Darts Championship final gets under way from around 8pm GMT and will be contested over the best of 13 sets.
