Luke Littler looks to seal his spot in a second successive World Championship final when he faces Stephen Bunting at Alexandra Palace on Thursday.
Littler’s landmark run to the final on his debut 12 months ago catapulted him into the limelight, and the teenage sensation has not looked back, going on to enjoy a dream first season on the PDC circuit which has seen him claim the Premier League, World Series Finals and Grand Slam titles.
Provisionally ranked world number two, Littler is bidding to cap off his remarkable year by lifting the sport’s most iconic trophy and becoming its youngest ever World Champion in the process.
The Nuke got his campaign off and running with an emotional 3-1 victory over Ryan Meikle before Christmas, averaging 100.8 and landing ten 180s, before comfortably dispatching Stoke veteran Ian White 4-1 on Saturday with the aid of twelve 180s.
He then held off a spirited display from Ryan Joyce to edge through in a gripping seventh-set decider with a 103 average, before seeing off his stablemate Nathan Aspinall 5-2 in the quarter-finals on New Year’s Day, registering his eighth ton-plus average on the Ally Pally stage and taking his 180 tally for the tournament to 51.
Littler, who celebrates his 18th birthday later this month, is vying to become the first player since Phil Taylor in 1994/1995 to reach back-to-back World Championship finals in their first two appearances in the event.
Standing between Littler and another shot at history is crowd favourite Bunting – who has stormed into his second PDC World Championship semi-final.
Bunting’s last appearance at this stage of proceedings came behind closed doors in 2020/21, when he was denied by eventual champion Gerwyn Price.
BDO World Champion in 2014, ‘The Bullet’ finished runner-up in a staggering six Players Championship events this season and his run here has seen him climb to a career-high fifth in the PDC Order of Merit.
Bunting recovered from a set down to dispatch German debutant Kai Gotthardt in his opener, before averaging 100 in a commanding 4-1 win over Latvia’s Madars Razma and whitewashing Luke Woodhouse.
He then held off a late fightback from Peter Wright to defeat the two-time World Champion 5-2 in the quarter-finals, maintaining a tournament average of 96.2.
This will be the first televised meeting between Littler and Bunting as they face off on the sport’s greatest stage for a date with destiny.
The match gets under way from around 9.30pm GMT and will be contested over the best of 11 sets, with either three-time World Champion Michael van Gerwen or former Masters champion Chris Dobey awaiting the winner in the final on Friday night.
