Dave Chisnall scoops second Players Championship title of 2024

Dave Chisnall sealed his second ProTour title of the year at Players Championship 23 with an 8-4 win over Chris Dobey in Leicester on Wednesday.

Having also claimed the Flanders Darts Trophy title on the European Tour earlier this month, Chisnall continued his blistering run of form to scoop the £15,000 top prize at the Mattioli Arena.

The victory also sees the St Helens star climb to fifth in the PDC Order of Merit and move further clear at the top of the ProTour Order of Merit.

Chisnall began his run with a 6-2 victory over Callan Rydz in Round One, before seeing off Dylan Slevin 6-3 and Jeffrey Sparidaans 6-2.

He then averaged 107.2 in a deciding-leg victory over Madars Razma in the Last 16, before averaging 108.7 in a 6-2 success over Mervyn King in the quarter-finals.

A third consecutive ton-plus averaged followed as Chizzy ended the run of Stephen Burton with a 7-4 triumph, averaging 102.2 in the process.

The final proved to be a cagey affair, with Chisnall opening up a 3-1 lead before Dobey hit back to draw level at three apiece.

Chisnall then reeled off four consecutive legs to regain control at 7-3, and after Dobey had stopped the rot in leg 11, Chisnall made no mistake in closing out the contest in the following leg.

“The final was a tough battle, it wasn’t a good game but I’m just happy to get over the line,” said Chisnall.

“I think my game is up there with the best in the world at the moment; I’m playing really well and my confidence is high.

“Six months ago I was losing first and second round matches but then I started to battle and I’ve won some big titles.

“There are some big events coming up and I normally have a good end to the year; I just need to get my TV form going now.

“I’m looking forward to the World Grand Prix; I’ve been hitting my doubles well so it should be a good one for me.”

Dobey’s 7-2 semi-final win over Martin Schindler saw him produce a nine-dart finish in the opening leg of a scintillating display in which he registered his fifth ton-plus average of the tournament.

That was the second perfect leg of the day, following Adam Warner’s nine-darter in his Second Round defeat to Jurjen van der Velde.

Burton enjoyed a fine run to the semi-finals courtesy of wins over Christian Kist, Dirk van Duijvenbode and Andy Boulton, before edging out both Rob Cross and Damon Heta in last-leg deciders.

King reached his first ranking quarter-final in two years, while Tuesday’s winner Gary Anderson was accounted for by Jonny Clayton in the Last 16.
