The 2024 Nordic Darts Masters commences in Copenhagen on Friday as the PDC stars and Nordic & Baltic representatives collide.
A host of the sport’s biggest names return to Forum Copenhagen from June 7-8 for the fourth World Series event of the year.
The elite eight PDC representatives will each be looking to avert an early exit at the hands of a Nordic & Baltic hopeful as they bid to book a place in Saturday’s quarter-finals.
Reigning champion Peter Wright will launch the defence of his title with a tie against Sweden’s Johan Engstrom.
Wright secured his fourth World Series title with victory here in January 2023, but faces a tricky opener against the PDCNB Tour Event winner.
Having finished bottom of the Premier League table for the second successive season, Wright is looking to turn his fortunes around and challenge for a first televised title since last October’s European Championship.
Engstrom is no stranger to a scalp on the big stage, having thrashed Joe Cullen 6-1 with a 99 average in April’s European Grand Prix.
World number one and World Champion Luke Humphries opens up against Danish youngster Benjamin Drue Reus.
The pair met in the UK Open back in March, with Humphries completing a routine 10-3 win in the Last 32 en route to finishing runner-up.
Humphries also fell narrowly short in the Premier League with defeat to nine-dart hero Luke Littler in the final last month and remains in search of his first final appearance on the World Series after losing out to eventual champion Rob Cross in the semi-finals of the recent US Masters.
Drue Reus is the sole Danish representative in the event and will look to replicate the form which led him to a shock win over Gary Anderson on the ProTour earlier this season.
Cross is bidding to pick up from where he left off in New York to make it back-to-back World Series titles, and he starts out against Sweden’s Jeffrey de Graaf.
De Graaf is one of three Nordic & Baltic Tour Card holders in the field and notably reached the Third Round of the World Championship last December, defeating Ritchie Edhouse and Jose De Sousa before bowing out at the hands of Cross by four sets to two at Ally Pally.
Gerwyn Price aims to go one better than his runner-up finish in New York last week, and the former World Champion faces Latvian talisman Madars Razma in Round One.
Price was agonisingly denied a first televised singles title since 2022 in a last-leg decider against Cross, having registered two ton-plus averages on his way to the final at Madison Square Garden.
He faces a tough opener against world number 36 Razma – who enjoyed a sensational run to the semi-finals of the Baltic Sea Darts Open last month with wins over Chris Dobey, Dave Chisnall, Joe Cullen and Ryan Searle along the way.
Michael Smith, the 2023 World Champion, has been drawn to face Finland’s Paavo Myller – who replaces the suspended Vladimir Andersen.
Smith will be determined to bounce back from last week’s shock 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Jeff Smith in the opening round of the US Masters – where he averaged just 86.5.
World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall starts out against Finland’s Marko Kantele – a five-time PDC World Championship qualifier and World Cup of Darts stalwart.
Aspinall’s season so far has been one of near misses, having agonisingly missed out on a place in the Premier League play-offs on Night 16, while most recently going down 6-5 to Humphries in the quarter-finals in New York.
The opening match of the evening sees reigning UK Open champion Dimitri van den Bergh take on Swedish veteran Dennis Nilsson.
Van den Bergh claimed the first of his successive World Series titles at this event in 2022 and was also runner-up in last year’s Poland Darts Masters.
Masters champion Stephen Bunting marks his return to the World Series with a showdown against Swedish star Daniel Larsson.
Bunting’s last World Series appearance saw him finish runner-up to Phil Taylor at the 2014 Sydney Masters, while Larsson has featured in all three previous stagings of this event and is seeking his first win.
The action gets under way from 6pm BST, with First Round ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
