Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price set up a semi-final showdown at the Grand Slam of Darts with dominant wins over Michael Smith and Ricky Evans on Friday.

The two former World Champions produced timely late bursts to deny their resurgent opponents and remain in contention for the £150,000 top prize in Wolverhampton.

Humphries reeled off nine of the last ten legs to end Smith’s resilient run with a 16-8 triumph, averaging 105 in a clinical display.

The world number one coasted into a 4-0 lead before Smith reduce the deficit to 5-2 courtesy of a 97 checkout on double 19, tops.

An astonishing sequence of missed doubles from Humphries gifted Smith a route back into this match as he reeled off four legs on the spin to make it seven-all.

Humphries, however, hit back with a pivotal 138 checkout prior to the third interval and was merciless thereafter, going on to clinch eight of the next nine legs to book his place in the Last Four.

A remarkable moment of near-perfection in leg 11 saw Smith narrowly miss double 12 for a nine-darter, with Humphries having also kicked off the leg with back-to-back 180s.

“Honestly, when Michael missed it I said to him this is my chance to rewrite the same history you did,” revealed Humphries.

“How many times do you see a leg like that?”

“I lost a bit of concentration from it so I’ll from that to not get involved in that and make sure I’m fully focused.

“There’s a lot more in the tank and I can do better than that.

“Since I slowed my throw down a little bit, I feel like I’m so much more in control, the first dart is more consistent and I believe I can get better.

“Throwing slower does help me. Every dart you throw needs to mean something, so I feel like I’m a better player than I’ve ever been.

“Gezzy is going to push me and will work hard, but if I perform like that, I will put him under pressure a lot.”

Price, meanwhile secured his spot in a fourth Grand Slam semi-final since 2018 with a 16-9 victory over Tour Card holder qualifier Evans.

The three-time champion blitzed into a 4-0 lead amid several costly missed doubles from his opponent, before Evans reduced the deficit to 4-2.

Priced kicked off the seventh leg with seven perfect darts and converted tops for a 12-darter to make it 5-2 and restored a four-leg cushion at 7-3 prior to the second break.

Evans came back firing with successive legs to cut the gap but Priced reaffirmed command with a 116 checkout to lead 9-6 before adding back-to-back legs to move ever-closer to the winning line.

Evans refused to go down without a fight as he reduced the deficit to 12-8, but only for Price to clinch four of the next five legs to seal the deal, taking out 101 for the match.

“I was edgy in that game a little bit, but I prefer that because it keeps me on my toes,” said Price.

“It’s mad how everyone plays their best game against me! Twice Ricky played well in this tournament and it’s twice against me.

“I’m here to win it. I’m not here just to take part. I haven’t fired on all cylinders yet.

“When I’m in the semi-final, I need to play well if I’m going to win, and it’s going to be a battle no matter what.”
