The quarter-finals get under way at the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton on Friday as three former champions look to remain on course for glory.

Thirty-two came, now just eight remain in the running for the £150,000 top prize at the Aldersley Leisure Village.

The opening two quarter-final ties take place on Friday night with a significant increase in format from best of 19 legs to best of 31.

Luke Humphries, the 2023 champion, takes on 2022 champion Michael Smith in a repeat of their group stage clash earlier in the week.

Humphries prevailed 5-3 on that occasion on his way to topping Group A with maximum points, landing a sensational nine-darter in the process.

Humphries is bidding to defend his title-winning prize money from two years ago and hold down the world number one spot going into next week’s Players Championship Finals.

The 2024 World Champion has lost in the two most recent major ranking finals and is vying to become only the fourth multiple winner of this event since 2007.

He defied a freak injury scare to thrash debutant Jurjen van der Velde 10-3 in the Last 16 108.5 average, despite contemplating withdrawing from the event just hours earlier.

Smith, meanwhile, has continued his welcome resurgence to reach a second televised quarter-final of the year and provisionally climb back up to 28th in the Order of Merit.

The 2023 World Champion came through the Tour Card holder qualifier to secure his spot in a first televised ranking event since March’s UK Open.

Bully Boy overcame Nathan Aspinall and Alex Spellman to secure second spot in Group A, before edging out Chris Dobey in a remarkable last-leg decider in the Last 16 which saw the pair miss a staggering 20 match darts between them.

The opening quarter-final sees three-time champion Gerwyn Price take on a resurgent Ricky Evans.

Price is appearing in his fifth Grand Slam quarter-final since 2018 and a third major ranking quarter-final of the season.

Price, whose three titles here came between 2018 and 2021, continued his perfect record of reaching the knockout stages at the Aldersley Leisure Village.

A four-time Players Championship event winner this year, Price recovered from a shock opening day defeat to Ricky Evans by whitewashing James Wade and thrashing Stefan Bellmont 5-1 to finish top of Group D.

He then swept aside Martin Schindler 10-6 and is now eyeing a first major ranking semi-final appearance since the 2023 World Grand Prix.

Evans, who also came through the Tour Card holder qualifier, has enjoyed a fine return to the Grand Slam for the first time since 2020.

The world number 46 is out to do the double over Price, having claimed a 5-4 win in their opening group fixture on Saturday.

Victories over Price and Stefan Bellmont saw ‘Rapid Ricky’ finish runner-up in Group D in what is his first appearance in a TV major since March’s UK Open.

He then battled past Luke Woodhouse in a last-leg decider to advance to a third major ranking quarter-final and provisionally climb six places in the Order of Merit.

The action gets under way from 7pm GMT, with quarter-final matches to be contested over the best of 31 legs.
