Grand Slam of Darts 2023 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play
The Group Stage action continues at the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton on Sunday with a crucial second set of fixtures.
Another double session at the Aldersley Leisure Village sees part two of Groups B, D, F and H contested in the afternoon, before Groups A, C, E and G resume in the evening.
Saturday’s losers will face off in potentially decisive show-downs, while the opening day’s winners also collide in a bid to put one foot in the knock-out phase.
The afternoon session features an important clash between German Darts Championship winner Ricardo Pietreczko and reigning Women’s World Matchplay champion Beau Greaves.
Pietreczko was left to rue a missed match dart against Damon Heta on Saturday as he went down 5-4, and the 29-year-old debutant will be determined to bounce back and keep his qualification hopes alive.
Greaves was also denied in a thrilling last-leg decider despite a spirited showing against Nathan Aspinall – who took out 98 to snatch the two points.
Former World Cup of Darts winner Heta and reigning World Matchplay champion Aspinall will face off in the other Group H tie, with the winner all but securing a place in the Last 16.
Group B sees Chris Dobey take on Berry van Peer as both look to bounce back from their opening day defeats.
Masters champion Dobey averaged 85 in a below-par 5-2 defeat to Josh Rock, while Van Peer was beaten 5-2 by Jonny Clayton on his return to the Grand Slam for the first time since 2017.
World Cup of Darts winner Clayton and 2022 World Youth champion Rock then collide later in the afternoon in a tussle for top spot.
Recent European Championship semi-finalist Gian van Veen takes on qualifier Nathan Rafferty in the opening fixture of the day in Group D.
Van Veen was left stunned by Ryan Searle on Saturday after remarkably squandering a 4-0 lead in an eventual 5-4 defeat, missing five match darts in the process.
Northern Ireland’s Rafferty was thrashed 5-1 by three-time champion Gerwyn Price – who meets Tour Card holder qualifier Searle in a battle for top spot.
Andrew Gilding and Danny Noppert, the two most recent UK Open champions, face off in Group F as they look to take a huge step towards knock-out qualification.
Gilding overcame Brendan Dolan 5-3 on Day One, while world number seven Noppert defeated Japanese debutant Haruki Muramatsu by the same scoreline.
The evening session features a number of tasty ties, including World Grand Prix champion Luke Humphries up against two-time Grand Slam finalist Gary Anderson.
Both players battled back from behind to secure wins on Saturday night, with Humphries reeling off five legs on the spin from 2-0 down to defeat Steve Lennon, while Anderson recovered from 4-2 behind to edge past Dirk van Duijvenbode.
Van Duijvenbode was left to rue 16 missed darts at doubles in his opener and will be determined to make amends by subjecting Irish qualifier Lennon to a second straight defeat.
Former World Champions Michael van Gerwen and Rob Cross go head-to-head in a quest to move top of Group G going into the final set of fixtures.
Three-time champion Van Gerwen thrashed Fallon Sherrock 5-1 in his opener, while Cross dug deep to deny Martijn Kleermaker in a deciding leg, having trailed 4-2.
Sherrock, quarter-finalist here two years ago, aims to keep her knockout qualification hopes alive by pulling off an upset against Dutch debutant Kleermaker.
Reigning Grand Slam champion Michael Smith resumes the defence of his title with a clash against Krzysztof Ratajski in Group A.
Smith has won an astonishing 17 consecutive group stage matches in this event stretching back to 2017, while Ratajski has bowed out in the group stage in his last two Grand Slam campaigns.
Elsewhere in Group A, three-time Grand Slam finalist James Wade faces Scottish debutant Nathan Girvan as both aim to put two points on the board at the second time of asking.
A fascinating fixture in Group E sees newly-crowned European Champion Peter Wright face 2014 Grand Slam runner-up Dave Chisnall.
Wright was humbled 5-1 by American debutant Stowe Buntz on Saturday and will be desperate to avert a third Group Stage exit in his last four Grand Slam appearances, while Chisnall missed a match dart in a narrow 5-4 defeat to Stephen Bunting.
Buntz, who recorded the highest average of the opening day (102.3), will look to pick up from where he left off as he faces in-form qualifier Bunting – who is vying to reach the Last 16 of this event for the first time since 2018.
The action gets under way from 1pm GMT, with all Group Stage matches to be contested over the best of nine legs.
