The Quarter-Final action draws to a close at the Grand Slam of Darts on Saturday as four players attempt to break new ground in Wolverhampton.
Ten-time major winner James Wade and World Grand Prix champion Luke Humphries set up a Semi-Final show-down after edging out Josh Rock and Gary Anderson respectively in epic contests on Saturday night.
None of the four players remaining in the bottom half of the draw have ever made it beyond this stage of the Grand Slam but find themselves presented with a golden opportunity to challenge for the Eric Bristow trophy.
The opening match of the night sees former Lakeside Champion Stephen Bunting take CDC Continental Cup winner Stowe Buntz.
The pair met in the Group Stage last Sunday, with Buntz pulling off a shock 5-3 victory on his way to topping Group E.
The colourful American has proved to be one of the stand-out stories of the tournament, defying the odds to reach the Last Eight on his television debut.
Having also thrashed Peter Wright 5-1 in his opening group fixture with a 102.2 average, the 44-year-old overcame UK Open champion Andrew Gilding 10-5 in the Last 16 to continue his dream run.
Buntz has already racked up £28,500 in prize money, carrying him into the world’s top 100, and will also be making his debut in next month’s World Championship.
However, Buntz enters uncharted territory over this format and comes up against a player in arguably the most consistently clinical form of his PDC career to date.
Bunting, runner-up in this season’s German Open, stormed through the Tour Card holder qualifier to seal his spot in this event, and after knocking out European Champion Wright in their group shootout, he thrashed world number seven Danny Noppert 10-4 in the Last 16.
The Bullet is appearing in the Quarter-Finals of this event for the first time since his debut at the Wolves Civic back in 2014 and is vying to reach a first major ranking Semi-Final since the 2021 World Grand Prix.
The second match of the evening then sees 2018 World Champion Rob Cross face former World Cup of Darts winner Damon Heta.
The duo notably met in the final of the New Zealand Masters in August, with Cross storming to an 8-1 demolition to make it back-to-back World Series titles.
Cross saw off Fallon Sherrock 5-2 in their decisive Group G fixture to maintain his perfect record of knockout qualification from seven appearances in the Grand Slam.
He then came through a high quality encounter 10-8 against Nathan Aspinall, averaging 104 to his opponent’s 103.4 to reach this stage of the event for the third time.
Heta, meanwhile, narrowly secured second spot in Group H courtesy of a dramatic 5-4 win over Beau Greaves in their straight shootout, surviving a match dart in the process.
He then dumped out three-time champion Michael van Gerwen with a 10-7 success in the Second Round and is now looking to reach his first PDC major ranking Semi-Final.
The Australian number one, who also reached the Quarter-Finals on his Grand Slam debut behind closed doors in 2020, has provisionally climbed into the world’s top ten for the first time in his career.
The action gets under way from 7pm GMT, with Quarter-Final matches to be contested over the best of 31 legs.
