German Darts Championship 2023 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play
The seeded stars begin their German Darts Championship campaigns on Saturday as the Second Round action takes centre stage in Hildesheim.
The final European Tour event of the year features 48 players battling it out for £175,000 in prize money at Halle 39.
Following Sunday’s climax, the top 32 players on the European Tour Order of Merit will secure a place in the European Championship later this month.
All eyes will be on newly-crowned World Grand Prix champion Luke Humphries as he makes his first competitive appearance since his historic first major triumph last weekend.
Humphries defeated Gerwyn Price in the final of the double-start event in Leicester to become the latest new winner of a PDC major, climbing in to the world’s top four in the process.
Humphries has reached the final in six of the 12 European Tour events so far this year, winning one, and opens up with a clash against Croatia’s Boris Krcmar – who defeated Ryan Joyce in Round One.
Meanwhile, reigning champion Michael van Gerwen launches the defence of his title with a tie against Ireland’s Steve Lennon.
The evening session also sees world number three Peter Wright take on Masters champion Chris Dobey – who came through a dramatic decider against Lee Evans on Friday.
Top seed Dave Chisnall begins his quest for a fourth Euro Tour title of the season with a show-down against German number one Gabriel Clemens – one of four host nation hopefuls left standing in the event.
An all-German affair sees recent World Grand Prix quarter-finalist Martin Schindler take on emerging star Ricardo Pietreczko, while qualifier Nico Kurz comes up against World Cup winner Jonny Clayton in the afternoon session.
World number one and World Champion Michael Smith starts his latest pursuit of a second Euro Tour title of the season with a tie against Alan Soutar – who is leading the chasing pack in the race to reach the European Championship.
The opening match of the afternoon features a tasty tussle between 2018 World Champion Rob Cross and 2023 World Youth finalist Gian van Veen – who has made two Euro Tour Quarter-Finals this term.
Joe Cullen, semi-finalist in last week’s World Grand Prix, returns to action to face former World Youth champion Arron Monk – who battled past Florian Hempel in his opener.
Reigning European Champion Ross Smith faces off against former Euro Tour event winner Daryl Gurney, while second seed Damon Heta starts out against Associate Member qualifier Darryl Pilgrim – who thrashed Jeff Smith 6-1 on Friday.
Dirk van Duijvenbode, twice a beaten finalist on the Euro Tour this year, faces George Killington – who defied a nine-darter from Scott Waites to come through a pulsating contest in Round One.
World Youth champion Josh Rock looks to arrest his recent dip in form when he faces Stephen Bunting – runner-up in this year’s German Darts Open.
Reigning World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall is tasked with a formidable opener against ten-time major champion James Wade – who saw off Jelle Klaasen in Round One.
Former UK Open champion Danny Noppert faces a tricky opener against a resurgent Jules van Dongen, as multiple PDC title winner Ryan Searle meets former Euro Tour finalist Martin Lukeman.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with First Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
