The 2023 German Darts Championship gets under way in Hildesheim on Friday as the qualifiers go head-to-head.

The 13th and final European Tour event of the year features 48 players battling it out for £175,000 in prize money at Halle 39 this weekend.

Following Sunday’s climax, the top 32 players on the European Tour Order of Merit will secure a place in the European Championship later this month.

Six places remain up for grabs in the European Championship and one of those could be determined following Friday’s First Round action.

Steve Beaton currently occupies the 32nd and final provisional qualification spot but could be overthrown by Chris Dobey, should the reigning Masters champion overcome fellow Tour Card holder qualifier Lee Evans this evening.

Dylan Slevin is the next highest ranked player in the chasing pack and requires a run to at least the Quarter-Finals this weekend if he is to have any chance of gate-crashing Dortmund.

The Irish youngster faces German star Nico Kurz on Friday afternoon, with Kurz having come through the Host Nation qualifier to seal his spot in the event.

Alan Soutar must reach at least the Semi-Finals in order to keep his European Championship hopes alive, and the Scot opens up against Czech ace Karel Sedlacek.

One of the stand-out ties of the opening round sees ten-time major champion James Wade take on former Lakeside Champion Jelle Klaasen – one of two Associate Member qualifiers.

Darryl Pilgrim, the other Associate Member qualifier in the field, takes on this year’s US Masters runner-up – Jeff Smith.

The afternoon session also sees two-time BDO World Champion Scott Waites face George Killington, while former European Tour finalist Martin Lukeman meets Latvian number one Madars Razma.

Croatia’s Boris Krcmar opens up against recent ProTour event finalist Ryan Joyce, while Ireland’s Steve Lennon and host nation hopeful Marcus Kirchmann battle it out for the right to face Michael van Gerwen in Saturday’s Second Round.

Hungary’s Patrik Kovacs faces resurgent American Jules van Dongen in the final match of the afternoon.

The evening session sees World Youth finalist Gian van Veen take on James Wilson, before home favourite Florian Hempel faces former World Youth champion Arron Monk.

Two former European Tour event winners go head-to-head as Daryl Gurney plays Vincent van der Voort, while German Darts Open runner-up Stephen Bunting comes up against Sweden’s Jeffrey de Graaf – the 2015 World Trophy runner-up.

Ricardo Pietreczko, who narrowly missed out on a place in the recent World Grand Prix, looks to delight his home crowd by overcoming Northern Irish stalwart Mickey Mansell.

World Championship semi-finalist and German number one Gabriel Clemens kicks off his campaign against former ProTour event winner Danny Jansen.

The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with First Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
