Dutch Darts Championship 2023 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play
The top seeds commence their 2023 Dutch Darts Championship campaigns on Saturday as the Second Round action takes centre stage in Leeuwarden.
The sixth of 13 European Tour events this season features 48 players battling it out for £175,000 in prize money at the WTC Expo in Leeuwarden from April 28-30.
A host of big names fell by the wayside on Day One of the competition, including Gary Anderson, Raymond van Barneveld and Kim Huybrechts, and the 16 seeded players will be out to avert an early exit of their own.
Michael Smith kicks off the defence of his title in the evening session with a clash against former BDO world finalist Jim Williams.
Smith heads to the Netherlands on the back of winning his second Premier League weekly title in Leeds on Thursday and is vying for a second Euro Tour triumph of the season.
Former ProTour event winner Williams got off and running in style by thrashing George Killington 6-1 on Friday with an average of 104.2.
Last weekend’s Austrian Open champion Jonny Clayton launches his quest for back-to-back titles with a tie against reigning Dutch Open champion Berry van Peer – who saw off Alan Soutar 6-2 in his opener.
Home hero Michael van Gerwen begins his latest pursuit of a first Euro Tour title of the year with a show-down against German number one Gabriel Clemens.
Van Gerwen was beaten in the final of the International Open earlier this season and will also be out to bounce back from Thursday’s disappointing defeat to Peter Wright in Leeds.
Clemens edged out 21-year-old Gian van Veen in a high quality deciding leg contest on Friday with a 98.3 average and will be out to spoil the party against another Dutch star.
Dirk van Duijvenbode, runner-up in last month’s European Darts Open and a winner of three Players Championship events this season, is also set for a rapturous reception on home soil when he steps out to face Irish youngster Dylan Slevin.
Former UK Open champion and World Cup star Danny Noppert gets his campaign under way in the afternoon session against Latvian ace Madars Razma – who averaged 103.2 in defeating John O’Shea on Friday.
Top seed Luke Humphries, winner of four Euro Tour titles in 2022, resumes his quest for a first title of this term with a show-down against current European Champion Ross Smith in what promises to be a high-scoring epic.
Dimitri van den Bergh defeated Dutch icon Van Barneveld 6-3 with a superb 105.6 average in Round One and will now face multiple ranking event winner Ryan Searle – the number 11 seed.
The evening session kicks off with a tie between Premier League star Nathan Aspinall and two-time major champion Daryl Gurney.
Aspinall reached his first Euro Tour final in Munich a fortnight ago and also claimed a Premier League weekly title in Rotterdam, while a resurgent Gurney was a semi-finalist in Graz last weekend and averaged 101 in his opening salvo here to defeat Ricardo Pietreczko 6-2.
Two-time World Champion Peter Wright faces a formidable opener against recent Players Championship event winner Krzysztof Ratajski – who averaged 99.7 in seeing off Andy Boulton 6-4 on Friday.
Josh Rock, last weekend’s Austrian Open runner-up, starts his bid to go one better in Leeuwarden when he takes on debutant qualifier Graham Hall – who whitewashed Adam Gawlas in his opener.
Baltic Sea Darts Open champion Dave Chisnall looks to bounce back from last week’s Second Round defeat to Mickey Mansell when he faces former Euro Tour finalist Martin Lukeman.
UK Open champion Andrew Gilding starts out against three-time Euro Tour event winner Ian White, while fourth seed Damon Heta meets former Lakeside Champion Steve Beaton.
The afternoon session also features a tie between former Premier League runner-up Joe Cullen and former Lakeside Champion Stephen Bunting, while 2018 World Champion Rob Cross faces former UK Open semi-finalist Keane Barry.
Czech qualifier Roman Benecky’s reward for his shock First Round scalp of Gary Anderson is a meeting with German number two Martin Schindler.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Second Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
