Czech Darts Open 2024 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play
The seeded stars commence their 2024 Czech Darts Open campaigns as the Second Round takes centre stage in Prague on Saturday.
Day One saw a number of big names sent packing at the PVA Expo, including Dimitri van den Bergh, Joe Cullen and Daryl Gurney.
The 16 highest ranked players from the PDC ProTour Order of Merit enter the fray on Day Two as the race to reach the European Championship enters the final straight.
Only three places remain up for grabs in next week’s major in Dortmund, with Andrew Gilding, Nathan Aspinall and Dirk van Duijvenbode currently occupies the final three provisional qualification spots.
Aspinall can confirm his place in the draw by overcoming Premier League champion Luke Littler in their box office clash in the evening session.
The two-time major winner thrashed host nation qualifier Michal Šmejda 6-1 in Friday’s opening round, but now faces a formidable test against his stablemate – who is eyeing a third European Tour title of the season as he looks to bounce back from his First Round exit at the World Grand Prix, as well as successive Second Round defeats on the ProTour in midweek.
Meanwhile, world number one Luke Humphries faces a showdown with in-form Ritchie Edhouse – who averaged 97.2 in a 6-2 win over Czech qualifier Jiří Brejcha.
Humphries saw his World Grand Prix title defence fall agonisingly short in the final last Sunday but now turns his attention towards regaining this title which he first won in 2022.
Reigning champion Peter Wright steps up the defence of his title with a tie against Martin Schindler – the current number one on the European Order of Merit.
Wright added the German Championship title to his CV earlier this year and closed out a high quality 6-5 win over Cameron Menzies in Friday’s opener with a 97.3 average.
Schindler has racked up two European Tour titles this season, including the Swiss Darts Trophy three weeks ago, meaning he is in pole position to head to Dortmund next week as top seed for the European Championship.
Hungarian Darts Trophy winner Michael van Gerwen, winner of a ProTour event in midweek, begins his bid for a second Euro Tour title of the year when he faces former World Master Krzysztof Ratajski.
The evening session also features a clash between reigning Masters champion Stephen Bunting and 2021 Masters champion Jonny Clayton.
With Gerwyn Price having withdrawn from the event due to a neck injury, Maik Kuivenhoven steps in from the Reserve List to take on his Dutch compatriot Raymond van Barneveld – who enjoyed a ruthless 6-0 whitewash of Daryl Gurney on Friday with a 98 average.
Top seed Dave Chisnall, twice a European Tour event winner in 2024, starts out against Dutch left-hander Niels Zonneveld – who leads the chasing pack in the European Championship race but must reach the final in Prague in order to snatch a qualification spot.
A repeat of last year’s European Championship semi-final sees James Wade take on Gian van Veen, with ‘The Machine’ looking to maintain the form which saw him thrash Daniel Markovsky 6-1 on Friday with a 105.6 average.
The afternoon session features a tie between former World Champion Michael Smith and Ryan Searle – runner-up in the recent Swiss Darts Trophy after remarkably squandering seven match darts in the final.
Newly-crowned World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker aims to continue his blistering run of form when he faces former UK Open champion Danny Noppert.
Less than a week after securing a maiden major title in Leicester, De Decker averaged 104 in thrashing Brett Claydon 6-1 in Prague.
Having dumped out Joe Cullen in the opening round, host nation qualifier Pavel Drtil is set for a rapturous reception when he returns to face Dutch Darts Championship winner Josh Rock.
Damon Heta, twice a Players Championship event winner this year, aims to regain his top form on the big stage when he faces German star Gabriel Clemens – who thrashed Brendan Dolan 6-1 in the opening round.
Chris Dobey, a three-time Players Championship event winner this season, opens up against Jermaine Wattimena – who took out 141 in the deciding leg to overcome Hungary’s Patrik Kovács.
Ross Smith, twice a runner-up on the European Tour this year, takes on Players Championship event winner Alan Soutar, while Kim Huybrechts looks to capitalise on his late call-up via the Reserve List as he faces Luke Woodhouse.
The opening match of the afternoon sees former German Championship winner Ricardo Pietreczko meet 2022 German Grand Prix runner-up Martin Lukeman.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Second Round ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
