Belgian Darts Open 2024 | Day Three Preview and Order of Play
The first European Tour title of 2024 is up for grabs at the Belgian Darts Open on Sunday as the final eight face off in Wieze.
A £30,000 top prize is on offer at the Oktoberhallen as nine seeds and seven qualifiers collide over two sessions.
The afternoon session plays host to the Third Round ties, before the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and final follow in the evening.
One of the stand-out ties of the Last 16 sees former World Champions Gerwyn Price and Gary Anderson renew their rivalry.
The pair last met at this stage of the Grand Slam in November, with Anderson prevailing 10-6 to gain a degree of revenge for defeat in the infamous 2018 final.
Anderson, the number 14 seed, is making only his third Euro Tour appearance since 2016, having reached the quarter-finals of this event last year.
Winner of a Players Championship event last month, Anderson is targeting a first Euro Tour title in a decade and got his campaign under way with a high quality 6-5 win over Sweden’s Andreas Harrysson with an average of 103 on Saturday.
Price, meanwhile, has endured a frustrating start to the season by his standards, sitting second from bottom in the Premier League and suffering an early exit at the UK Open, but impressed in his 6-4 success over Gabriel Clemens on Saturday with a 101.2 average.
Luke Littler aims to remain in contention for glory in his debut Euro Tour campaign as he takes on Damon Heta in a repeat of their UK Open epic a week ago.
Premier League star Littler survived two match darts from Jose De Sousa in Round One before seeing off Krzysztof Ratajski 6-3, and the teenage sensation will be out to avenge last week’s quarter-final agony.
Heta came out on top 10-8 in a thrilling contest in Minehead which saw him average 106 to Littler’s 104.7, with the Aussie breaking new ground by reaching his first televised ranking Semi-Final.
Heta, who thrashed Brendan Dolan 6-1 on Saturday, claimed his maiden Euro Tour title at the 2022 Gibraltar Trophy and was a four-time semi-finalist last season.
World number one Luke Humphries steps up his quest for a sixth Euro Tour title when he meets his close friend Ryan Searle.
Humphries picked up from where he left off in winning Night Six of the Premier League on Thursday as he recorded a blistering 110.6 average in thrashing James Wade 6-1 in the Last 32.
The reigning World Champion boasts a dominant recent record over Searle, having won their meetings in last year’s Grand Slam and Players Championship Finals en route to claiming both titles.
Searle has already picked up a ProTour title and reached a further two finals this season and held his nerve to edge out Richard Veenstra in a deciding leg on Saturday.
Two-time World Champion Peter Wright marks his 54th birthday with a clash against a resurgent Jonny Clayton.
Wright, the joint second most successful player in European Tour history, saw off Host Nation qualifier Geert De Vos in Round One before punishing an out of sorts Michael van Gerwen to secure a confidence-boosting 6-4 victory on Saturday night.
Clayton, twice an Austrian Open champion, averaged 98.6 in a 6-4 win over Berry van Peer and has won his last three televised meetings with Wright.
Former World Champion Rob Cross, who claimed his first Euro Tour title at last year’s European Darts Grand Prix, comes up against 2022 UK Open champion Danny Noppert – who survived six match darts from Chris Dobey in his opener.
German Championship winner Ricardo Pietreczko aims to remain in the running for consecutive Euro Tour titles when he takes on multiple ProTour event winner Ryan Joyce in the opening tie of the day.
Masters champion Stephen Bunting aims to spoil the party in Wieze by ending the hopes of the last remaining Belgian hopeful in the draw – Mike De Decker.
Bunting, runner-up in last year’s German Darts Open, has come through two last-leg deciders so far this weekend, edging past UK Open champion Dimitri van den Bergh and Josh Rock.
De Decker denied WDF world finalist Chris Landman 6-5 in Round One before punishing a struggling Michael Smith to seal a dominant 6-2 win and delight a sell-out home crowd.
Three-time Euro Tour event winner Joe Cullen faces a tricky tie against an in-form Jermaine Wattimena – who has swept aside Daryl Gurney and Ross Smith for the combined loss of just two legs.
Cullen averaged 104.4 in a 6-2 victory over Dirk van Duijvenbode and landed a remarkable brace of 170 checkouts in the process.
The action gets under way from 12pm GMT, with Third Round and Quarter-Final ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs, Semi-Finals best of 13 and the final best of 15.
