Austrian Darts Open 2024 | Day Three Preview and Order of Play
The Austrian Darts Open draws to a close in Graz on Sunday as the 16 remaining players battle to be crowned champion.
A £30,000 top prize is on offer at the Steiermarkhalle as ten seeds and six qualifiers face off across two sessions.
The afternoon session plays host to the Third Round ties, before the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and final follow in the evening.
Defending champion Jonny Clayton resumes his quest for a third Austrian Open title with a showdown against recent International Open champion Martin Schindler.
Clayton punished a disaster on the doubles from Chris Dobey to storm to a 6-1 rout on Saturday, while Schindler followed up his incredible 111.4 average in defeating James Wade on Friday by whitewashing Ricardo Pietreczko with another ton-plus average in Round Two.
Michael van Gerwen, the most successful player in the history of this event, steps up his pursuit of a fifth title with a tie against Peter Wright in a repeat of Thursday’s Premier League quarter-final.
Van Gerwen prevailed 6-3 in Liverpool to avert a third straight defeat to ‘Snakebite’ – who had beaten him in the Belgian Darts Open on the European Tour earlier this year.
Van Gerwen opened up with a 102.6 average in a 6-2 success over Jeffrey De Zwaan on Saturday, while Wright ended a run of nine straight defeats in all competitions by edging out Danny Lauby in a last-leg decider.
Premier League leader Luke Littler continues his bid for a second European Tour title of the season when he takes on former European Tour event winner Krzysztof Ratajski.
Littler, who stormed to glory with a nine-darter at the Belgian Open, followed up Thursday’s Premier League Night 13 triumph in Liverpool with wins over Zoran Lerchbacher and Damon Heta in Graz, averaging 106 in the latter contest.
Ratajski registered his first win on the European Tour this season at the fifth attempt as he saw off debutant Dom Taylor 6-2.
The opening match of the afternoon sees number one seed Dave Chisnall take on three-time European Tour event winner Joe Cullen.
Chisnall picked up three European Tour titles of his own last year but has struggled for form so far this term as he looks to reach a first quarter-final of the campaign.
Cullen averaged 102 in a 6-3 win over Darius Labanauskas on Saturday and is also eyeing his first quarter-final appearance on the Euro Tour this season.
Josh Rock, runner-up in last year’s Austrian Open, takes on two-time European Tour event finalist Danny Noppert.
Rock averaged 102.7 in a high quality deciding-leg win over Dimitri van den Bergh in Round Two, while tenth seed Noppert dispatched his Dutch compatriot Wessel Nijman 6-3 with a 104 average.
A resurgent Ritchie Edhouse looks to progress to his second Euro Tour quarter-final of the campaign and strengthen his position in the provisional World Matchplay places when he meets Gian van Veen.
Edhouse is enjoying arguably the best spell of form of his career to date and has already seen off Arron Monk and Dirk van Duijvenbode this weekend, while Van Veen is through to the Last 16 of a Euro Tour event for the first time this year after thrashing Jose De Sousa 6-1 and edging out Ryan Searle in a last-leg epic.
Another tasty tie sees reigning Masters champion Stephen Bunting take on former Euro Tour event winner Daryl Gurney.
Bunting battled past Richard Veenstra in a deciding leg after landing a brace of 170 checkouts, while Gurney pulled off an impressive 6-4 win over Thursday’s Premier League Night 13 finalist Rob Cross with a 100.5 average to back up his First Round defeat of Martin Lukeman.
Ross Smith, runner-up in last weekend’s European Grand Prix, aims to continue his charge towards back-to-back finals when he faces Germany’s Daniel Klose.
Smith produced a sensational display to deny Raymond van Barneveld in a deciding leg on Saturday, averaging 106 and landing seven 180s in the process.
Klose, meanwhile, benefitted from the withdrawal of Gerwyn Price through injury to receive a late call-up to the event, and seized his chance by defeating 2023 UK Open champion Andrew Gilding 6-2.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Third Round and Quarter-Final ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs, Semi-Finals best of 13 and the final best of 15.
