The First Round action continues at the European Darts Championship in Dortmund on Friday with a host of major title winners kicking off their campaigns.

Night One of the £600,000 major saw two of the top four seeds crash out amid a host of one-sided scorelines at the Westfalenhallen.

Three former winners of this prestigious title are among a star-studded line-up on Night Two, including reigning champion Peter Wright.

Wright, winner in 2020 and 2023, begins the defence of his title with a tie against Jermaine Wattimena – a three-time quarter-finalist on the European Tour this season.

Wright, winner of the German Darts Championship last month, is aiming to avoid a third consecutive First Round exit in a televised ranking tournament.

Meanwhile, world number one Luke Humphries launches his quest for a first European Championship crown with a clash against two-time major winner Nathan Aspinall.

Humphries is the number two seed after picking up two European Tour titles this season, including the Czech Darts Open last weekend, and is looking to continue his sensational run in televised ranking tournaments.

The reigning World Champion, who finished runner-up in the recent World Grand Prix, has reached the final in each of his last six major ranking tournaments, winning four.

Aspinall, semi-finalist in 2021, continues his recovery from a shoulder problem which left him sidelined for ten weeks over the summer and was beaten in the Last 16 of both the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix.

Premier League champion Luke Littler marks his European Championship debut with a tie against former UK Open champion Andrew Gilding.

Littler has claimed two European Tour titles in his maiden campaign, as well as finishing runner-up in the German Championship, and is seeded number three as he eyes a first major PDC ranking title.

The 17-year-old twice set a new tournament record average in last weekend’s Czech Open, including a 116.51 against Damon Heta and thrashed Michael van Gerwen 6-1 with a 110.5 average before eventually losing out to Humphries in the semi-finals despite a 106.7 average.

Gilding makes his third consecutive appearance in this competition but faces an uphill task if he is to make it third time lucky in his quest for a first victory.

Reigning World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker looks to continue his remarkable run of form when he meets sixth seed Josh Rock in the final match of the evening.

De Decker’s fairy-tale triumph in the double-start major has seen him climb to a career-high 25th in the Order of Merit, and the Belgian has also claimed a Players Championship title this season as well as two quarter-final runs on the European Tour.

Rock secured his first European Tour title at the Dutch Darts Championship in May and has also picked up a ProTour title this year, though he has suffered disappointing First Round exits in both the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix.

Two former European champions collide as Rob Cross takes on James Wade in another stand-out contest.

Cross has claimed this title in 2019 and 2021, while Wade triumphed in 2018 and has finished runner-up on a further two occasions since.

Cross, winner of the Baltic Sea Darts Open in May, has fallen at the quarter-final hurdle in each of his last three major ranking tournaments, while Wade reached the semi-finals of July’s World Matchplay but managed just one quarter-final run on the European Tour.

Damon Heta, twice a Players Championship event winner this season, starts out against 2023 German Championship winner Ricardo Pietreczko – runner-up in this year’s Flanders Darts Trophy.

Two former Masters champions go head-to-head as Chris Dobey plays Jonny Clayton.

Clayton came out on top in both of their European Tour meetings this season and was runner-up in the Dutch Darts Championship, while Dobey has racked up three Players Championship titles this term and reached two Euro Tour semi-finals.

The opening match of the night sees former UK Open champion Danny Noppert face former Masters champion Joe Cullen.

Noppert was a semi-finalist in last year’s European Championship and has landed a Players Championship title in 2024, while Cullen made the semis of this event in 2018 and 2021 and was runner-up in this year’s Austrian Open.

The action gets under way from 6pm BST, with First Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
