European Darts Championship 2023 odds | Van Gerwen favourite for fifth crown
Michael van Gerwen has been installed as the favourite to claim a record fifth European Darts Championship title in Dortmund.
Van Gerwen is locked level with Phil Taylor on four European Championship titles, having claimed four in a row between 2014 and 2017, but this marks his joint longest drought of any major televised tournament, along with the Grand Slam.
The Dutch star eclipsed Taylor’s tally of six Premier League titles earlier this year and has also picked up the US Masters and Poland Masters titles, as well as the World Series Finals.
He fell short in the final of the UK Open at the hands of Andrew Gilding and is out to atone for his shock early exits at the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix.
Runner-up in the European Championship two years ago, Van Gerwen is the 7/2 favourite with BetMGM to recapture the crown, and is seeded number three in the draw, housed in a quarter that also includes defending champion Ross Smith, World Youth champion Josh Rock and 2023 World Youth finalist Gian van Veen.
Only Van Gerwen and Taylor have ever managed to successfully defend this title, and Bet MGM make Ross Smith 33/1 to achieve that feat, having sensationally secured his first major silverware on this stage 12 months ago.
Gerwyn Price came closest to lifting this trophy in 2019 when he was beaten in the final, and the world number five follows closely in the market at 4/1 to end a two-year wait for a televised ranking title.
Fresh from his historic World Grand Prix triumph earlier this month, Luke Humphries is aiming to make it back-to-back major titles and is priced at 9/2 to do so.
World number one and reigning World Champion Michael Smith is 7/1 to go one better than his runner-up spot here last year and pick up a third major ranking title.
Rob Cross is one of only three players to have lifted this trophy on more than one occasion, and the 2019 and 2021 champion is 16/1 with Bet MGM to complete the hat-trick.
Peter Wright, the 2020 European Champion, has shown signs of a timely return to form in recent weeks and is 20/1 to capture a third title of the season, having triumphed at the Nordic Masters and Czech Open.
Elsewhere, top seed Dave Chisnall is 22/1 to finally end his wait for an elusive maiden major, having enjoyed a remarkable season on the European Tour which has seen him claim three titles.
Nathan Aspinall is 30/1 to replicate his World Matchplay exploits this summer, while Masters champion Chris Dobey is a 33/1 chance to land a second televised title of the campaign.
Raymond van Barneveld returns to the European Championship for the first time since 2015, but a tough opening assignment against Michael Smith means the five-time World Champion is a 100/1 outsider to go all the way at the Westfalenhallen.
