The 2023 European Darts Championship draws to a close on Sunday as the final eight face off for the title in Dortmund.
Five of the world’s top eight ranked players are left standing in the race for the £120,000 top prize, alongside two major winners and an emerging superstar.
Only eight different players have lifted this trophy in the 15-year history of the event, and three of them remain in the running to add to their tally.
One of whom is four-time champion Michael van Gerwen, who is vying to eclipse Phil Taylor’s joint record and become the outright most successful player in European Championship history.
Van Gerwen went unbeaten in this competition from 2014-2017, but his six-year drought is the longest of any major ranking tournament for the Dutch sensation.
He survived a huge scare from Madars Razma on Friday night as the Latvian squandered two match darts to allow the Dutchman off the hook, and he then avenged his recent German Championship defeat at the hands of eventual winner Ricardo Pietreczko by sealing a 10-7 victory with a 104 average.
Van Gerwen now comes up against compatriot Gian van Veen for the first time in PDC competition for what promises to be a pulsating encounter.
Van Veen announced himself in sensational style on Friday, achieving the highest average (107.34) ever recorded by a debutant in this competition as he swept aside sixth seed Damon Heta 6-1.
The World Youth finalist then dug deep to defeat two-time major winner Daryl Gurney 10-6 for a place in his first televised Quarter-Final, setting up the biggest match of fledgling career to date.
The opening match of the afternoon sees 2020 European Champion Peter Wright take on reigning Masters champion Chris Dobey.
Wright has continued his impressive recent resurgence to reach his second successive major Quarter-Final, having battled back from 4-1 down to defeat home hero Gabriel Clemens, before thrashing a struggling Michael Smith 10-4 in Saturday’s Second Round.
Dobey reached the Semi-Finals here 12 months ago and is appearing in a third consecutive major ranking Quarter-Final, having thrashed top seed Dave Chisnall 6-2 in his opener before edging out in-form Stephen Bunting 10-8 with a 97.6 average.
Second seed Luke Humphries continues his bid for back-to-back major titles when he meets 2018 European Champion James Wade.
Wade notably defeated Humphries to claim his most recent major title at the 2021 UK Open, but ‘Cool Hand Luke’ has since prevailed in each of their five subsequent meetings.
Humphries landed his first major silverware in Leicester earlier this month and has continued in that ruthless vein by dropping a combined six legs in wins over Brendan Dolan and Krzysztof Ratajski so far this weekend.
Wade, meanwhile, is through to a first major ranking Quarter-Final since the 2022 UK Open, following victories over struggling duo Dirk van Duijvenbode and Jose De Sousa for the loss of just four legs.
The ten-time major winner is now provisionally back among the world’s top 16 after recently dropping out for the first time in 17 years.
Gerwyn Price steps up his pursuit of a maiden European Championship title when he faces world number eight Danny Noppert.
Price finished runner-up in the 2019 European Championship and is out to end a two-year wait for a televised ranking title, having lost out in the final of the World Grand Prix earlier this month.
The reigning World Cup winner opened up with a 6-1 rout of Keane Barry inside 12 minutes on opening night, before reeling off five consecutive legs to seal a 10-5 triumph over Nathan Aspinall with seven 180s and a 102.2 average to his name.
Noppert produced one of the stand-out performances of the opening round in the first match of the tournament as he whitewashed UK Open champion Andrew Gilding with a 106 average and 75 per cent on the doubles, before overcoming two-time European Champion Rob Cross 10-7 in the Last 16.
The 2022 UK Open champion is appearing at this stage of the European Championship for the third straight year and is looking to avenge his defeat to Price in the World Grand Prix earlier this month.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Quarter-Final matches to be contested over the best of 19 legs and the Semi-Finals and final best of 21.
