Bahrain Darts Masters 2024 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play
The eight PDC stars go head-to-head as the 2024 Bahrain Darts Masters draws to a close on Friday.
Day One of the season’s first World Series event saw the big names all progress at the Bahrain International Circuit, though not without surviving a scare along the way.
The tournament reaches its climax on Friday with the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and final to be held in one unmissable session.
Reigning champion Michael Smith steps up the defence of his title with a clash against European Champion Peter Wright.
Just a fortnight after becoming World Champion, Smith went on to claim his third World Series title and become the inaugural Bahrain Masters champion 12 months ago, but that proved to be his only televised silverware of the season.
A below-par year for Bully Boy saw him reach the Semi-Finals of the Masters, Premier League and World Grand Prix, but end the season as world number three following a Last 16 defeat to Chris Dobey at the World Championship.
Smith’s title defence here was almost ended at the first hurdle by Paolo Nebrida, but two missed match darts from the Filipino afforded him a reprieve to seal a 6-5 victory with a 98.3 average and six 180s.
Wright was also given a scare in his opener on Thursday, edging out PDC Asian Champion Haruki Muramatsu in a deciding leg.
The two-time World Champion claimed his eighth major title at the European Championship last October, the highlight of an otherwise below-par year which culminated in a Second Round exit to Jim Williams at the World Championship.
Wright ended the campaign at his lowest ranking (eighth) in more than a decade but has been handed a place in the upcoming Premier League and will look to go into that event on a high.
Newly-crowned World Champion Luke Humphries takes on Gerwyn Price in a repeat of last year’s World Grand Prix final.
Humphries prevailed by five sets to two in the double-start showpiece to land his first major title and has not looked back since, going on to dominate on the big stage.
Grand Slam and Players Championship Finals titles soon followed for ‘Cool Hand Luke’, before fulfilling his darting destiny by winning the World Championship a fortnight ago and becoming world number one in the process.
A 6-0 whitewash of local qualifier Abdulla Saeed on Thursday saw Humphries extend his unbeaten run to 20 matches in all competitions.
Price finished runner-up in last year’s Bahrain Masters, and the three-time World Series event winner will be determined to bounce back from his shock Third Round exit to Brendan Dolan at Ally Pally.
The Welsh World Cup winner fended off a stern test from Reynaldo Rivera to seal a 6-4 victory in Round One and is out to end Humphries’ rampant winning run.
World Championship finalist Luke Littler looks to pull off another big-named scalp when he comes up against World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall.
Littler made global headlines courtesy of his fairy-tale debut run to the final at Alexandra Palace a fortnight ago, narrowly falling short of becoming darts’ youngest ever World Champion.
Just a few days short of his 17th birthday, Littler is back on the big stage and enjoyed a superb World Series debut win over Hong Kong’s Man Lok Leung on Thursday, averaging 98 with four 180s and a high checkout of 151.
The teenage sensation now faces fellow Premier League star Aspinall – who had to survive two missed match darts from Lourence Ilagan to snatch a 6-5 win in his opener.
Aspinall was beaten by Ricky Evans in his opener at Ally Pally, marking a disappointing end to an otherwise memorable year which saw him triumph in Blackpool and finish runner-up in the World Series Finals.
A repeat of four previous major finals sees Michael van Gerwen take on Rob Cross in another box office battle.
Van Gerwen has won three of those finals, most recent at the 2022 Players Championship Finals, and has claimed a staggering 19 titles in 51 World Series appearances.
The current Premier League and World Series Finals champion, making his debut in Bahrain, will be determined to bounce back from his shock Quarter-Final defeat at the hands of Scott Williams in the World Championship.
Cross enjoyed a resurgent 2023 campaign which saw him finish runner-up in the Masters and Grand Slam and reach the Semi-Finals of the World Championship, resulting in a return to the Premier League this year.
The three-time World Series event winner opened up with a solid 6-3 success over Japan’s Tomoya Goto on Thursday.
The action gets under way from 4pm GMT (7pm local time), with Quarter-Final matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs, Semi-Finals best of 13 and the final best of 15.
