Menzies ready to give up plumbing to pursue darting pipe dream

Cameron Menzies admits he is close to achieving his darting pipe dream but fears giving up his job as a plumber.
The popular Scot is just one weekend of glory away from securing a coveted two-year PDC Tour Card.
Menzies, 29, has also just signed for darts manufacturer giants Unicorn and now believes it is just down to him to produce the results now.
“I’ve got a huge weekend coming up in Peterborough next month for the PDC Challenge Tour,” Menzies told Live Darts.
“The top two in the rankings get tour cards for two years. I’m currently second and if I have a good weekend in four events and stay second, I’m through.
“However there’s so many guys who can still steal my spot so it won’t be easy. I need to have a really good few results.”
With Michael Barnard already assured of top spot in the Challenge Tour Order of Merit, Menzies it battling to hold down second spot and avoid having to enter Qualifying School for the second successive year.
Securing a Tour Card would then leave the Glaswegian with a decision to make as to whether to quit his day job and become a full-time professional.
“That would be massive for me,” he added. “To get a Tour Card could change my life overnight.
“I’d then have to seriously look at going full-time because there’s so many Players and European Championships on the PDC circuit, almost every weekend.”
“It would mean thinking about leaving the comfort zone of my plumbing job with ESS Electrics in East Kilbride. They’ve been brilliant to me, the bosses Gordon and John have allowed me time off to pursue my darts dream already.
“But it’s pretty scary to think about going professional with darts. It’s my dream and I want to do it but I have to keep pinching myself that it could actually happen.
“I’ll worry about that after the Challenge Tour in Peterborough. I’m not getting ahead of myself. If I don’t make it, I’ll be back at Q School in January to get my Tour Card.”
Menzies reached the final of Challenge Tour Four back in January before going one better by winning Event 15 last month.
The final four Challenge Tour events of the year take place in Peterborough from November 10-11 and Menzies is aiming to peak at the right time.
He added: “I’ve done OK this year. I’ve not set the world on fire but I’ve been fairly consistent and that’s got me this far. One more weekend and it can go down as a good year.”
Menzies also revealed he was annoyed at himself for not getting a proper haircut or shave before his signing picture shoot with Unicorn – because he was too busy watching Kevin Bridges live!
“I usually get a shave at the weekend but I forgot and then I went to watch Kevin which was brilliant,” he added.
“I’ve been too busy to get a haircuit. My pal’s missus usually does it but I’ve not had a chance lately with darts and plumbing. So I looked a bit of a mess. I’ll have to sort it soon!”
