The Second Round action takes centre stage at the 2024 European Championship in Dortmund on Saturday as a host of decorated darters collide.

A dramatic opening round at the Westfalenhallen saw 11 of the top 16 seeds crash out, including defending champion Peter Wright and top seed Martin Schindler.

However, a number of star names remain in the running for the £120,000 top prize this weekend and will be eyeing a place in Sunday’s quarter-finals.

The stand-out tie of the Second Round sees four-time champion Michael van Gerwen face Gary Anderson in a repeat of the 2015 final.

Van Gerwen claimed a thrilling 11-10 victory on that occasion, marking the second of his four consecutive European Championship titles during a remarkable period of dominance.

The Dutchman, who has picked up three ranking titles since September, came closest to regaining the title in 2021 when he was beaten by Rob Cross in the final.

Van Gerwen thrashed home favourite Gabriel Clemens 6-1 in Thursday’s opening round with a 100 average, and faces Anderson in a TV major for the first time since the 2022 World Grand Prix.

Anderson marked his return to the European Championship for the first time since 2016 with a 6-3 success over Stephen Bunting, averaging 100.8 in an accomplished display.

Meanwhile, world number one and tournament favourite Luke Humphries looks to maintain his blistering start to the weekend when he meets multiple major winner Jonny Clayton.

Humphries, winner of last weekend’s Czech Darts Open, picked up from where he left off in Prague by hammering Nathan Aspinall 6-2 with a 106.5 average and seven maximums to his name.

The reigning World Champion, who finished runner-up in the recent World Grand Prix, has reached the final in each of his last six major ranking tournaments, winning four.

Clayton, semi-finalist in 2020, overcame Chris Dobey 6-4 and will be out to avenge his 3-1 defeat to Humphries in the World Grand Prix earlier this month.

The evening session also sees 2018 champion James Wade take on in-form Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena.

Wade, semi-finalist in this year’s World Matchplay, climbed back up to 13th in the Order of Merit following an impressive 6-3 win over Rob Cross with a 100.7 average on Friday.

Wattimema, meanwhile, pulled off a remarkable 6-0 whitewash of defending champion Peter Wright on his return to this event for the first time since 2019.

Andrew Gilding’s reward for a shock win over Premier League champion Luke Littler is a showdown with home favourite Ricardo Pietreczko.

Gilding pulled off a 6-4 scalp of an out of sorts Littler on Friday to register his first win in this event at the third time of asking.

German ace Pietreczko reeled off three straight legs from 5-3 down to edge out Damon Heta in a decider – a result which moved him into the world’s top 32.

The afternoon session features a clash between 2023 World Champion Michael Smith and a resurgent Ritchie Edhouse.

Smith, runner-up here in 2022, swept aside a struggling Dave Chisnall 6-0 in Round One but will be wary of a tough examination ahead from Edhouse – who recorded the highest average of the opening round (109.5) in a sensational 6-1 rout of Gian van Veen.

Two former European Championship semi-finalists go head-to-head as Dirk van Duijvenbode meets Daryl Gurney.

Van Duijvenbode, who held on to the last available qualification spot, took full advantage by dumping out top seed Schindler in Round One despite a 101.8 average from his opponent.

Gurney averaged 99 in a 6-3 defeat of Gerwyn Price, adding to his whitewash win over MVG in the recent World Grand Prix, and the Northern Irishman will be keen to back it up with an equally strong showing this time around.

Reigning World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker aims to continue his sensational spell of form when he faces world number 15 Danny Noppert.

De Decker, who has also claimed a Players Championship title this season, thrashed a struggling Josh Rock 6-1 on Friday on his debut in this event, while Noppert saw off Joe Cullen 6-2 and is bidding to reach a fourth consecutive European Championship quarter-final.

Swiss Darts Trophy finalist Ryan Searle comes up against an in-form Luke Woodhouse in the opening match of the afternoon.

Searle enjoyed a comfortable 6-2 win over Raymond van Barneveld with a 101.6 average on opening night and is now vying to progress beyond this stage of the event for the first time.

Woodhouse, one of three debutants in this year’s field, thrashed 2022 champion Ross Smith 6-1 and now meets ‘Heavy Metal’ for the first time in a televised major.

The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Second Round matches to be contested over the best of 19 legs.
