European Darts Championship 2024 | Day One Preview and Order of Play
The 2024 European Championship gets under way in Dortmund on Thursday with two former champions in action on opening night.
The culmination of this season’s European Tour features the top 32 players from the European Order of Merit competing for £600,000 in prize money at the Westfalenhallen.
A number of big names feature on Night One, including four-time champion Michael van Gerwen – who opens with a clash against home favourite Gabriel Clemens.
The pair have met twice on the European Tour this year, with Van Gerwen prevailing on both occasions, including a 6-2 success en route to claiming the Hungarian Darts Trophy title last month.
Van Gerwen remarkably claimed this title in four consecutive stagings from 2014-2017 and came closest to regaining the title in 2021 when he was beaten by Rob Cross in the final.
Clemens, twice a televised ranking semi-finalist in 2023, is making his fifth consecutive appearance in the European Championship but is yet to make it beyond the First Round.
One of the stand-out ties of the opening night sees two-time World Champion Gary Anderson take on reigning Masters champion Stephen Bunting.
Anderson has appeared in only two European Tour events this season, but effectively confirmed his place in this event courtesy of his European Grand Prix title back in April.
Twice a Players Championship event winner this season, Anderson returns to the European Championship for the first time since 2016 and was runner-up to Van Gerwen a year earlier.
Bunting made his debut in this event a decade ago, famously defeating Phil Taylor 10-9 en route to the quarter-finals, and ‘The Bullet’ has reached five ProTour finals this season, as well as two Euro Tour semi-finals.
Ross Smith, the 2022 champion, begins a crucial European Championship campaign with a tie against Luke Woodhouse.
Smith sensationally claimed a maiden major title here two years ago and is defending £120,000 in prize money from his ranking, with a First Round defeat here potentially seeing him drop 11 places to 20th in the Order of Merit.
Woodhouse is making his debut in this event after reaching two European Tour quarter-finals in 2024 and has also reached two Players Championship semi-finals.
World number two Michael Smith, runner-up here two years ago, opens up with a showdown against fellow St Helens star Dave Chisnall.
Smith’s best run on the European Tour this season saw him reach the semi-finals of the European Darts Open in June and he returns for an 11th consecutive European Championship appearance looking to bounce back from his recent First Round exit at the World Grand Prix.
Chisnall, the number four seed, has enjoyed another memorable year on the European Tour, picking up the European Darts Open and Flanders Darts Trophy titles, climbing back to fifth on the Order of Merit in the process.
Gerwyn Price, the 2019 runner-up, faces a tough opener against two-time major winner Daryl Gurney.
The pair also met in July’s World Matchplay – where Price prevailed 10-4 after reeling off five straight legs in their First Round contest in Blackpool.
Price has endured a difficult year on and off the oche, with injury problems hampering his progress and just one European Tour final and one Players Championship final to his name, as well as Second Round exits in the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix.
Gurney reached the semi-finals of this event in 2017 and 2019 and enjoyed an emphatic whitewash win over Van Gerwen in the recent World Grand Prix, as well as a run to the semis of the German Darts Championship last month.
Top seed Martin Schindler aims to delight the partisan German crowd by overcoming 2022 semi-finalist Dirk van Duijvenbode.
A sensational year on the European Tour for Schindler has seen him secure two titles – the International Darts Open and Swiss Darts Trophy – as well as reach a further two semi-finals.
Van Duijvenbode, who continues on the comeback trail after an injury nightmare over the past 18 months, held on to the final qualification spot for this event following Kim Huybrechts’ defeat in last weekend’s Czech Darts Open final.
Ryan Searle, runner-up in the Swiss Darts Trophy, takes on five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld in another mouth-watering tie.
Searle was left to rue seven missed match darts against Schindler in the final in Basel last month, but did pick up a Players Championship title earlier in the year and remains on the outskirts of the world’s top 16.
Van Barneveld is eyeing a first win in this competition since reaching the semi-finals a decade ago, and the resurgent 57-year-old remains upwardly mobile in the world rankings after winning a Players Championship event this season and reaching the quarter-finals of the Swiss Darts Trophy.
The opening match of the tournament sees last year’s semi-finalist Gian van Veen face Ritchie Edhouse.
Van Veen enjoyed a memorable debut here 12 months ago, defeating the likes of Damon Heta and Van Gerwen, and has continued his superb form by reaching the final of the Hungarian Darts Trophy, as well as a second successive World Youth Championship final.
Edhouse is also making his second appearance in this event, three years on from his first, following two quarter-final runs on the European Tour this year, qualifying for 11 of the 13 events.
The action gets under way from 6pm BST, with First Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
