Czech Darts Open 2024 | Day One Preview and Order of Play

The 2024 Czech Darts Open commences in Prague on Friday as the qualifiers collide in the opening round.

The final European Tour event of the year sees 48 players competing for £175,000 in prize money at the PVA Expo from October 18-20.

Following this weekend’s event, the 32-player field for the European Championship – to be held in Dortmund later this month – will be confirmed.

A crucial day in the race for European Championship qualification sees a number of big names vying to secure their spot in the £600,000 major.

Nathan Aspinall is currently occupying the final provisional qualification spot, and the two-time major winner has been drawn to face Host Nation qualifier Michal Smejda in Round One.

Just seven places remain up for grabs in the European Championship, and among those battling to reach Dortmund is newly-crowned World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker – who would all but secure qualification if he can overcome Brett Claydon in Round One.

Five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld, winner of a Players Championship event this season, can clinch his spot in the European Championship by overcoming two-time major winner Daryl Gurney in the evening session.

Former World Championship semi-finalist Gabriel Clemens faces former World Grand Prix finalist Brendan Dolan – who must win to keep his European Championship qualification hopes alive and leave the German relying on results elsewhere.

Michael Smith, the 2023 World Champion, also has work to do if he is to reach Dortmund, with ‘Bully Boy’ currently occupying 29th spot going into his clash against Dutch ace Kevin Doets – which marks a repeat of their epic World Championship encounter last December.

Having received a late call-up via the Reserve List, Madars Razma looks to seize his opportunity when he takes on Krzysztof Ratajski, with a win moving the Latvian into the provisional qualification places.

Callan Rydz looks to maintain his hopes of reaching the European Championship by overcoming another former Euro Tour finalist in Martin Lukeman.

Peter Wright launches his defence of his Czech Open title with an all-Scottish showdown against Cameron Menzies – for whom victory would move him into a provisional European Championship spot.

Reigning UK Open champion Dimitri van den Bergh, semi-finalist in last week’s World Grand Prix, must defeat Jonny Clayton in order to preserve his hopes of gatecrashing the European Championship.

Meanwhile, ten-time major winner James Wade opens up against home hopeful Daniel Markovsky, as Dutch ace Jermaine Wattimena faces Hungary’s Patrik Kovacs.

Ritchie Edhouse, a recent debutant in the World Grand Prix, meets Host Nation qualifier Jiri Brejcha, while German star Florian Hempel takes on Players Championship event winner Alan Soutar.

The opening match of the afternoon sees Welshman Robert Owen face Dutch left-hander Niels Zonneveld, while multiple European Tour event winner Joe Cullen faces Czech thrower Pavel Drtil.

Luke Woodhouse, who is already assured of European Championship qualification, starts out against Finland’s Marko Kantele.

The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with First Round ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
