The 2024 World Series of Darts Finals commences in Amsterdam on Friday as a host of star names aim to avoid an early exit.

The World Series Finals is the culmination of the seven World Series events held throughout the year, as 32 players compete for £400,000 in prize money at the AFAS Live.

The tenth staging of the £400,000 non-ranking tournament runs from September 13-15 and features the top eight players from the World Series Order of Merit joined by eight Tour Card holder qualifiers, plus a further nine World Series Order of Merit qualifiers, four PDC Order of Merit qualifiers and a further three PDC invites.

Home favourite Michael van Gerwen begins the defence of his title with a showdown against former Premier League champion Jonny Clayton.

Van Gerwen is the most successful player in World Series Finals history, having claimed the title on five occasions since 2015, and his only PDC title of 2024 so far came on the World Series at the Dutch Masters back in January.

Clayton also has his name on the World Series Finals Roll of Honour after claiming glory here in 2021 – the most recent of his four televised singles titles.

The Welshman notably defeated MVG in the Netherlands at the Dutch Darts Championship in May, recovering from 6-4 down to snatch a 7-6 victory and reach his fourth European Tour final.

The opening night also includes a stand-out tie between Premier League champion Luke Littler and former European Champion Ross Smith.

Littler is making his debut in this event after a sensational first season on the World Series which saw him clinch the Bahrain Masters and Poland Masters titles, while also finishing runner-up in the Dutch Masters and Australian Masters.

The 17-year-old also has two European Tour and two Players Championship titles to his name this season and heads to Amsterdam as the number one seed.

World number ten Smith is one of four PDC Order of Merit qualifiers, having reached two European Tour finals this year as well as the quarter-finals of the World Matchplay and winning a ProTour event.

Meanwhile, world number one Luke Humphries opens up with a tie against New Zealand number one Haupai Puha.

Reigning World Champion Humphries has continued his remarkable form in TV majors, winning the World Cup of Darts alongside Michael Smith for England, before being crowned World Matchplay champion for the first time in July.

Another landmark moment for ‘Cool Hand’ also saw him secure his first World Series title at the New Zealand Masters last month, and he now makes only his second appearance in the World Series Finals.

Puha returns for his third consecutive appearance in this event, having pushed Rob Cross to a last-leg decider in Wollongong and Hamilton last month, but was denied victory on both occasions.

A tasty all-Dutch encounter sees former UK Open champion Danny Noppert take on former World Youth finalist Gian van Veen.

Noppert was runner-up in his debut appearance in the World Series Finals in 2019, losing out to Van Gerwen, while Van Veen is making his debut courtesy of his run to the semi-finals of the Dutch Masters at the beginning of the season – where he defeated Noppert 6-3 along the way.

Dutch legend Raymond van Barneveld is set for another hero’s reception when he steps up to face Sweden’s Johan Engstrom.

The five-time World Champion was beaten 6-5 by Van Gerwen in the quarter-finals of the Dutch Masters in Den Bosch in January but went on to win a Players Championship event two months later, cementing his place in the world’s top 32.

Reigning UK Open champion Dimitri Van den Bergh, twice a World Series event winner in 2022, faces a tough opener against former Masters champion Chris Dobey.

Van den Bergh finished runner-up in the 2021 World Series Finals and is now ranked world number 12 – one place above Dobey – who returns to this event for the first time since 2017.

Damon Heta, runner-up in the recent New Zealand Masters and twice a ProTour event winner this year, takes on German star Gabriel Clemens – who came through last month’s Tour Card holder qualifier and is bidding for his first win in this event at the fourth attempt.

The opening tie of the evening sees Masters champion Stephen Bunting return to the event for the first time since 2015 as he meets Croatian star Boris Krcmar – who defeated Nathan Aspinall in this year’s Poland Masters.

The action gets under way from 6pm BST, with First Round ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
