Austrian Darts Open 2024 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play
The top 16 seeds launch their 2024 Austrian Darts Open campaigns in Round Two in Graz on Saturday.
Day One at the Steiermarkhalle saw the likes of James Wade, Jose De Sousa and Gabriel Clemens suffer First Round exits in the season’s fifth European Tour event.
The 16 highest ranked players from the PDC ProTour Order of Merit enter the fray on Day Two, including reigning champion Jonny Clayton – who faces a clash with Chris Dobey in the evening session.
Both of Clayton’s Euro Tour titles have come at this event, having followed up his maiden success in 2018 with victory here 12 months ago, while Dobey began in style by defeating Graham Hall 6-2 with a stunning 106.5 average.
Michael van Gerwen, the most decorated player in the history of this event, begins his bid for a fifth title with a showdown against fellow Dutchman Jeffrey De Zwaan.
Van Gerwen remains in search of his first ranking title of the season and sits fourth in the Premier League following a semi-final defeat to Rob Cross in Liverpool on Thursday.
Ross Smith, runner-up in last weekend’s European Grand Prix, kicks off his quest to go one better when he takes on five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld – who produced a pivotal 136 checkout on his way to edging out Mike De Decker 6-5 on Friday.
World Championship finalist and Premier League leader Luke Littler resumes his quest for a second Euro Tour title of the year with a tie against second seed Damon Heta.
Less than 24 hours after picking up his third Premier League weekly title in Liverpool, Littler returned to the stage to defeat home favouirte Zoran Lerchbacher 6-2 and now faces Aussie ace Heta – whom he defeated en route to winning the Belgian Open.
Masters champion Stephen Bunting, who was a spectator at Thursday’s Premier League in Liverpool, returns to action to face former Dutch Open winner Richard Veenstra – who survived three match darts from Ricky Evans before taking out 104 in the decider to prevail.
Peter Wright looks to end a run of nine consecutive defeats in all competitions when he comes up against American debutant Danny Lauby.
Wright, who is rooted to the foot of the Premier League table, last tasted victory when he defeated De Sousa in the First Round of the German Grand Prix on March 30, and faces a tricky opener here against the rapid left-hander – who saw off Ryan Joyce 6-4 on Friday.
Dirk van Duijvenbode aims to avenge his 6-1 hammering at the hands of Ritchie Edhouse in Sindelfingen last week when the pair collide in Round Two once again.
Josh Rock, runner-up in last year’s Austrian Open, starts out against UK Open champion Dimitri van den Bergh – who landed a spectacular 152 checkout in the deciding leg to edge out Clemens 6-5 in Round One.
Three-time Euro Tour event winner Joe Cullen takes on Lithuanian number one Darius Labanauskas, while former UK Open champion Danny Noppert meets Dutch compatriot Wessel Nijman – who marked his first Euro Tour appearance since 2019 with a 6-5 win over Croatia’s Romeo Grbavac with the aid of six 180s.
Top seed Dave Chisnall aims to kick-start a much-needed surge in form when he takes on Brendan Dolan – who averaged 98.3 in a 6-3 win over Austrian qualifier Hannes Schnier in Round One.
Dom Taylor enjoyed an impressive Euro Tour debut as he defeated Christian Gödl with a 100.2 average, and the new Tour Card holder now takes on 15th seed Krzysztof Ratajski in Saturday’s opener.
Rob Cross, runner-up in Thursday’s Premier League Night 13 in Liverpool and a semi-finalist in Sindelfingen last weekend, looks to maintain his solid run of form when he faces two-time major winner Daryl Gurney.
Another stand-out tie sees multiple ranking event winner Ryan Searle take on World Youth finalist Gian van Veen in a repeat of their Players Championship 1 semi-final earlier this year.
A fascinating all-German affair sees recent International Open winner Martin Schindler face German Championship winner Ricardo Pietreczko.
Schindler continued his magnificent run of form by registering the highest average ever recorded by a German on the European Tour (111.37) in his 6-4 win over Wade on Friday.
Daniel Klose, who replaces Gerwyn Price in the draw after the Welshman withdrew through injury, starts out against 2023 UK Open champion Andrew Gilding.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Second Round ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
