German Darts Grand Prix 2024 | Day Three Preview and Order of Play
The second European Tour title of 2024 is up for grabs at the German Darts Grand Prix on Monday as the last 16 face off in Munich.
A £30,000 top prize is on offer at the Kulturhalle Zenith as ten seeds and six qualifiers collide over two sessions.
The afternoon session plays host to the Third Round ties, before the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and final follow in the evening.
Reigning champion Michael Smith resumes the defence of his title with a Last 16 showdown against Josh Rock to kick off the afternoon’s action.
Smith set down a marker on Sunday as he averaged 102 in a high quality 6-4 win over Cameron Menzies, while Rock was forced to dig deep to edge out Richard Veenstra in a last-leg decider.
Michael van Gerwen steps up his quest for a fourth German Darts Grand Prix title with a clash against Joe Cullen – a match which signals a repeat of the 2022 Premier League final.
Van Gerwen, who has won just one of his last six Premier League matches, fended off a late revival from Jeffrey De Zwaan to close out a 6-4 success on Sunday.
Cullen, a winner of three Euro Tour titles, followed up Saturday’s 6-2 win over Andrew Gilding with a 6-3 defeat of Jonny Clayton – which included a high checkout of 154.
Another tasty tussle sees eight-time Euro Tour event winner Gerwyn Price take on 2024 Players Championship event winner Ryan Searle.
Price put his recent Premier League struggles behind him as he averaged 100.2 in a 6-4 win over Peter Wright on Sunday and will be eyeing a repeat of last November’s Grand Slam form – when he whitewashed Searle 5-0 in the Group Stage with a 110.5 average.
Searle, a semi-finalist in the opening Euro Tour event of 2023, defied a shoulder problem to run out a comfortable 6-2 winner against Steve Lennon in Round Two.
Top seed Dave Chisnall, a winner of three Euro Tour titles last year, comes up against a resurgent Jermaine Wattimena.
Chisnall dispatched an out of sorts Dimitri van den Bergh in his opener despite a modest 90 average, but will be wary of the threat posed by Wattimena – who whitewashed Franz Rötzsch in Round One before punishing a disaster on the doubles from Stephen Bunting to seal a dominant 6-2 success.
Home hopes rest firmly on the shoulders of Martin Schindler, and the world number 24 aims to delight a sell-out crowd in Munich by overcoming Chris Dobey.
Schindler has seen off Czech qualifier Vítězslav Sedlák and fourth seed Damon Heta for the combined loss of just two legs, while Dobey averaged 103.4 in his opening win over Viktor Tingström before averaging 11 points less in a battling 6-4 defeat of Krzysztof Ratajski.
World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall takes on former European Champion Ross Smith in what promises to be another fascinating fixture.
Aspinall finished runner-up in Night Nine of the Premier League in Belfast last Thursday and has registered wins over Michael Unterbuchner and Dirk van Duijvenbode so far this weekend.
Smith thrashed a below-par Brendan Dolan 6-1 in his opener on Sunday and is bidding to reach the quarter-finals of a European Tour event for the fifth time.
World number one Luke Humphries aims to follow up Sunday’s sensational showing when he takes on former ProTour event winner Ryan Joyce.
Premier League leader Humphries produced the stand-out performance of the tournament so far as he defeated Luke Woodhouse 6-3 with a 108.7 average and high checkouts of 140, 170 and 161.
Joyce, meanwhile, followed up his First Round win over Kevin Doets by thrashing Ricardo Pietreczko 6-1 with an impressive 102.8 average.
Premier League star Rob Cross comes up against former UK Open champion Danny Noppert in a repeat of their meeting at this stage of the recent Belgian Open.
Cross stormed to a 6-1 rout on that occasion, avenging his defeat to Noppert in last October’s European Championship.
Cross was a comfortable 6-2 winner over Daryl Gurney on Sunday, while Noppert came through an epic contest to edge out Gian van Veen in a decider with a 104.6 average to the youngster’s 108.5.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Third Round and Quarter-Final ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs, Semi-Finals best of 13 and the final best of 15.
