World Seniors Championship 2024 | Day Four Preview and Order of Play
The 2024 World Seniors Championship reaches its climax at the Circus Tavern on Sunday as the final eight battle it out for the title.
A new name is guaranteed on the trophy as a host of star names and in-form qualifiers compete for the £30,000 top prize in Purfleet.
The afternoon session plays host to the quarter-finals, before the semi-finals and final follow in the evening.
The opening quarter-final sees former World Cup of Darts winner John Henderson take on former PDC world finalist Andy Hamilton.
Henderson came into the event as the pre-tournament favourite, having been agonisingly denied a return to the PDC ProTour last year by Owen Bates despite claiming two Challenge Tour titles.
The Highlander has twice recovered from a set down to reach the Last Eight, starting against ten-time Women’s World Champion Trina Gulliver, before dispatching former Players Champion Kevin Painter by the same 3-1 scoreline.
Hamilton, meanwhile, benefited from a First Round bye following the late withdrawal of Tony O’Shea, but marked his return to the Circus Tavern with a bang by dethroning defending champion Robert Thornton.
The Hammer survived a host of missed match darts from Thornton in a rollercoaster of a contest and will now look to end the hopes of another Scottish star.
Mark Dudbridge was another player to come through a dramatic deciding set on Saturday, and ‘Flash’ now faces Northern Ireland’s Colin McGarry.
Dudbridge, a former PDC World Championship and World Matchplay finalist, had edged out Glen Durrant in Thursday’s opener, before twice recovering from a set behind to deny home hero Richie Howson in the Last 16 with the aid of 11 maximums.
McGarry is through to his second televised World Seniors quarter-final after seeing off second seed Leonard Gates and 1995 Lakeside World Champion Richie Burnett both by 3-1 scorelines.
The Antrim ace has averaged 85 in both matches so far this weekend and is now looking to break new ground by reaching the semi-finals of a televised event for the first time.
Four-time Women’s World Champion Lisa Ashton continues her quest for an historic triumph when she meets Chris Mason.
Ashton is bidding to become the first female to win a televised tournament involving male players and has produced a pair of superb performances so far.
The former PDC tour card holder and 15-time PDC Women’s Series title winner dispatched Mike Huntley 3-2 in Round One, before sweeping aside 2015 BDO World Champion Scott Mitchell in straight sets.
Mason, meanwhile, has registered successive averages in the region of 86 in defeating Darryl Fitton 3-1 and Manfred Bilderl 3-2 to reach the quarter-finals on this stage for the first time in over 20 years.
Jim Long is looking to become the second Canadian to win a World Seniors major, following in the footsteps of David Cameron at the 2022 World Seniors Masters – the man he defeated in Thursday’s opening round.
Long, who came through the qualifiers to seal his spot in this event, boasts the only 90+ tournament average of the quarter-finalists, having also thrashed Martin Adams 3-0 on Saturday.
Long’s next test comes in the shape of fellow qualifier Paul Hogan – who has also claimed a World Seniors floor title in 2024.
Hogan began with a 3-1 win over Terry Jenkins in Round One, before powering past 2022 WDF World Champion Neil Duff in straight sets.
All matches up to and including the Semi-Finals will be contested over the best of five sets, while the final is best of nine. The deciding set of any match must be won by two clear legs, until the score line reaches 5-5 – when the 11th leg will be sudden death.
