Players Championship Finals 2023 | Day Three Preview and Order of Play

The final eight face off for the right to claim the 2023 Players Championship Finals crown in Minehead on Sunday.
The top 64 players on this year’s Players Championship Order of Merit started out on Friday, now just eight are left standing in pursuit of the £120,000 top prize.
The Quarter-Final line-up is comprised of four major ranking event winners and a further four players bidding to create their own slice of history.
The afternoon session will see the Quarter-Final ties take place, before the Semi-Finals and final follow in the evening, with the World Youth Championship final also on the bill.
Defending champion Michael van Gerwen continues his quest for a record-extending eighth Players Championship Finals title when he faces in-form Stephen Bunting in the opening Quarter-Final.
Van Gerwen, who has won seven of the last ten stagings of this event, defeated a below-par Callan Rydz in Round One before setting a new tournament record average of 118.52 in his 6-1 rout of Ross Smith and going on to defeat Mario Vandenbogaerde 10-6 later in the evening.
The Dutchman is provisionally back up to world number two and is looking to add this title to his Premier League and World Series Finals triumphs this season.
Bunting, meanwhile, is through to his second successive major Quarter-Final, having made the Semis of the Grand Slam a week ago, and ‘The Bullet’ has blasted past Mickey Mansell, Gian van Veen and Kim Huybrechts to reach this stage of the event for the third time since 2018.
A familiar fixture sees Luke Humphries and James Wade go head-t0-head for the third time in as many televised major tournaments.
Wade prevailed 10-6 on his way to reaching the final of the European Championship last month, before Humphries gained revenge with a 16-10 success in the Semi-Finals of the Grand Slam seven days ago.
The world number four is incredibly eyeing a third major title in the space of just seven weeks and has picked up from where he left off in Wolverhampton by overcoming Martin Lukeman, Radek Szagański and Ryan Searle, averaging 107.3 and 103.7 in the two latter ties.
After a below-par start to the season by his standards, Wade has come good at the crucial time and is into his third consecutive major Quarter-Final and a first in this event since 2017.
The ten-time major champion, now provisionally back up to world number 13, has seen off William O’Connor, Steve Lennon and Dimitri van den Bergh to continue his superb resurgence.
German number one Gabriel Clemens comes up against Luke Woodhouse, with both having defied the odds to progress through their section of the draw.
Clemens is appearing in his first major Quarter-Final since his ground-breaking run at the World Championship – where he made the semis at Ally Pally – and has produced a trio of terrific displays to defeat Connor Scutt, Josh Rock and Niels Zonneveld – thrashing the Dutchman 10-1 on Stage Two.
Woodhouse is into his first televised ranking Quarter-Final and victory in this contest would see him enter the world’s top 32 for the first time.
The 35-year-old has beaten three of the sport’s box office names to reach the Last Eight, knocking out Simon Whitlock, Rob Cross and Dave Chisnall on Stage Two, but now aims to replicate that success on the Main Stage.
Third seed Damon Heta and 11th seed Ryan Joyce both look to break new ground by reaching a maiden televised ranking Semi-Final.
Heta is appearing at this stage for the third time this season, having fallen at the Quarter-Final hurdle in the World Matchplay and Grand Slam.
The Aussie ace, now established in the world’s top ten, has defeated Jules van Dongen, Kevin Doets and Brendan Dolan and will feel this marks his best opportunity to date of reaching a major Semi-Final.
Joyce, however, will have other ideas having won through to his first major ranking Quarter-Final since the World Championship in 2018.
The tenacious Tynesider has seen off Daniel Klose, Joe Cullen and Jermaine Wattimena on Stage Two and will be out to avenge his defeat to Heta in a ProTour event final back in July.
The World Youth Championship final sees emerging Dutch star Gian van Veen, semi-finalist in the recent European Championship, face 16-year-old sensation Luke Littler – who finished second behind Van Veen in this year’s Development Tour Order of Merit.
The action gets under way from 12.45pm GMT, with Quarter-Final matches to be contested over the best of 19 legs and Semi-Finals and final best of 21.
