The 2023 Players Championship Finals begin in Minehead on Friday with a bumper double session of First Round action.

The £600,000 major features 64 players battling it out in a culmination of the 30 Players Championship events held during the course of the season.

The field is comprised of the top 64 players from the 2023 Players Championship Order of Merit, with seedings based on finishing positions on the PC Order of Merit.

Matches are held across two stages at the Butlins Minehead Resort, with a number of tasty ties on the cards on the opening day.

The afternoon session features a clash between last year’s beaten finalist Rob Cross and Scotland’s Cameron Menzies on the Main Stage.

Cross is looking to continue the fine form which led him to the final of the Grand Slam last Sunday but faces a tricky opener against a player who beat him 6-2 with a remarkable 114.5 average in a Players Championship event in September.

European Championship runner-up James Wade, who also reached the Semi-Finals of the recent Grand Slam, starts out with a tie against former World Cup of Darts finalist William O’Connor.

Two players to have featured in the final of a ProTour event this season go head-to-head as Gian van Veen faces Chris Landman, while Grand Slam quarter-finalist Josh Rock opens up against Austrian star Rowby-John Rodriguez.

Ross Smith, the 2022 European Champion and winner of a Players Championship event last month, starts out against former ProTour event winner Scott Williams.

Ryan Searle, runner-up in this event two years ago and a nine-dart hero in the recent Grand Slam, takes on Croatia’s Boris Krcmar, while Grand Slam quarter-finalist Damon Heta meets resurgent American Jules van Dongen – making his debut in this event.

The afternoon’s Stage Two line-up includes a tie between 2017 runner-up Jonny Clayton and Stephen Burton, while world number 15 Dimitri van den Bergh takes on Players Championship 30 finalist Jim Williams.

German number one Gabriel Clemens faces Players Championship 27 finalist Connor Scutt, as German Championship winner Ricardo Pietreczko plays Players Championship 22 finalist Christian Kist.

Recent Grand Slam semi-finalist Stephen Bunting looks to continue his blistering spell of form when he meets Mickey Mansell, while Players Championship 14 runner-up Luke Woodhouse takes on Players Championship 2 finalist Simon Whitlock.

Ryan Joyce, winner of Players Championship 26, meets German debutant Daniel Klose – runner-up in Players Championship 21.

Polish star Radek Szaganski, who claimed a shock triumph at Players Championship 27, plays Ian White – semi-finalist in this event in 2019, and Mike De Decker meets Mario Vandenbogaerde in an all-Belgian clash.

The evening session features a show-down between reigning champion Michael van Gerwen and Players Championship 19 winner Callan Rydz.

Van Gerwen has won seven of the last ten stagings of this event, while Rydz enjoyed a fine run to the Quarter-Finals 12 months ago.

Gerwyn Price, runner-up to MVG here in 2019, launches his latest quest for a maiden Minehead crown with a tie against Ricky Evans – who landed a nine-darter in the last Players Championship event of the season.

Gary Anderson, the number two seed who has picked up three Players Championship titles this year, starts out against former Lakeside champion Steve Beaton – an ever-present in this event since its inception in 2009.

Reigning Masters champion Chris Dobey comes up against five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld in another stand-out tie, while the Main Stage also hosts world number one and World Champion Michael Smith versus Dutch debutant Richard Veenstra.

Newly-crowned Grand Slam champion Luke Humphries launches his bid for a third major ranking title of the year with a tie against former Euro Tour finalist Martin Lukeman.

Humphries, who also triumphed at the World Grand Prix last month, has been the star performer of the season and is out to eclipse his run to the Semi-Finals of this event 12 months ago.

Ireland’s Dylan Slevin and Canada’s Matt Campbell kick off the action on the Main Stage, with Slevin replacing Danny Noppert in the draw after he withdrew for family reasons.

Andrew Gilding returns to the scene of his memorable UK Open triumph back in March when he faces Irish ace Steve Lennon on Stage Two.

Daryl Gurney, one of only three former champions in the field, starts out against Dutch left-hander Niels Zonneveld, while fourth seed Dave Chisnall – winner of two Players Championship titles this year – faces debutant Lee Evans.

Former Premier League finalist Joe Cullen faces former Czech Open winner Jamie Hughes, while Players Championship 9 winner Krzysztof Ratajski meets Maik Kuivenhoven.

Dirk van Duijvenbode, who played through the pain barrier at the Grand Slam amid a shoulder injury, returns to action to face Dutch compatriot Jermaine Wattimena.

Kim Huybrechts, winner of Players Championship 3 back in February and runner-up in this event on debut in 2012, faces Martin Schindler – who reached the Quarter-Finals of the UK Open here this year.

Former Grand Slam champion Jose de Sousa faces a tricky opener against Dutch ace Kevin Doets, while 2021 semi-finalist Brendan Dolan takes on Ritchie Edhouse – semi-finalist in Players Championship 26.

The action gets under way from 12.45pm GMT, with First Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
