Hungarian Darts Trophy 2023 | Day Three Preview and Order of Play
The 2023 Hungarian Darts Trophy draws to a close in Budapest on Sunday as the 16 remaining players compete for the title.
A £30,000 top prize is on offer at the BOK Sportcsarnok as 11 seeds and five qualifiers collide over two sessions.
The afternoon session plays host to the Third Round ties, before the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and final follow in the evening.
Following Sunday’s action, the top 16 players on the PDC Order of Merit will join the next 16 highest ranked players from the ProTour Order of Merit in the draw for the World Grand Prix.
Three places remain up for grabs in the prestigious double-start major, with Chris Dobey and Callan Rydz facing an anxious wait at home to discover if they have done enough to hold on to their spots.
Gian Van Veen and Luke Woodhouse look set to battle it out for the final qualification spot, with the Dutch youngster having leapfrogged Ricardo Pietreczko into the final provisional place as things stand.
The World Youth Championship finalist can guarantee a debut appearance in the Grand Prix if he can overcome second seed Damon Heta in the Last 16.
Van Veen has dropped just three legs in commanding wins over Brendan Dolan and World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall so far this weekend, while Heta whitewashed Host Nation qualifier Nandor Major with a 97 average on Saturday.
Woodhouse, meanwhile, would move into the provisional qualification spots on countback if he can dispatch two-time World Champion Peter Wright.
Woodhouse defeated back-to-back World Series event winner Rob Cross on Saturday and is now vying to reach the Quarter-Finals of a European Tour event for the first time.
Wright overcame two-time BDO World Champion Scott Waites 6-3 to secure his first win on a European Tour stage since his Czech Open triumph back in May.
Reigning champion Joe Cullen continues the defence of his title with a show-down against world number four Gerwyn Price.
Cullen opened up with a 6-4 success over James Wade despite an average of just 87.5 and will be eyeing a marked improvement against the World Cup winner – who blitzed Nathan Rafferty 6-0 with a 106 average to put down an immediate marker.
Premier League stars Michael van Gerwen and Jonny Clayton go head-to-head as they resume their bid for a second Euro Tour title of the season.
Van Gerwen is out to make it back-to-back titles after claiming a fifth World Series Finals crown on home soil in Amsterdam last weekend, and was a 6-4 victor over Ross Smith in Saturday’s opener.
Clayton can count himself somewhat fortunate to remain in the competition, having survived six missed match darts from Jermaine Wattimena before snatching a 6-5 win.
Third seed Luke Humphries resumes his quest for Euro Tour title number six when he meets German number two Martin Schindler.
Humphries produced the performance of the tournament so far to defeat Keane Barry 6-2 with a 108.5 average, while Schindler saw off Polish youngster Sebastian Białecki 6-1 with a ton-plus average of his own.
World number one and reigning World Champion Michael Smith takes on power-scoring Belgian – Mike De Decker.
Smith, who claimed glory at the German Darts Grand Prix in April and has also picked up titles on the World Series and ProTour this term, defeated Jose De Sousa 6-4 despite a modest average of 89 in Round Two.
De Decker followed up a battling 6-4 win over UK Open champion Andrew Gilding with a 6-1 demolition of Josh Rock and is now aiming to progress to the Last Eight of a European Tour event for the first time.
Top seed Dave Chisnall looks to remain in the running for a third Euro Tour title of the season by ending the run of Austrian ace Rowby-John Rodriguez.
A resurgent Scott Williams has already seen off Richard Veenstra and Dirk van Duijvenbode to reach the Third Round of a Euro Tour event for the third time, and he now faces 13th seed Danny Noppert – twice a runner-up on the Euro Tour last season.
The action gets under way from 12pm BST, with Third Round and Quarter-Final ties to be contested over the best of 11 legs, Semi-Finals best of 13 and the final best of 15.
